Hello everyone! I am new here to the forum and really enjoy reading all the interesting posts and especially all the great photos you guys take.
I have just purchased a DMT 600 and 1200 diamond grit sharpener for use on my knifes, but the instructions that came with it are terrible. I am new to sharpening knifes, but I really wanted to learn how to do it and also be able to have a portable system to take with me when I am traveling or out in the bush, that is why I went with the DMT hone.
Can anyone please explain to me how I should use this properly so I don't hack up my knifes????
Thank you!

There are tons of posts out here current and in the archives which address your request. Try the search button in the archives forum. You'll be reading all day....good info....and you'll find you'll develop your own techniques as time goes on and you become more proficient at sharpening.

Welcome TOCAN: I would recommend useing the search function. In this section of bladefourms it works well. Their is a ton of older posts with great step by step advice and pic's. I would just say that useing DMT's diamonds is pretty much like useing any bench stone just use less pressure. Good luck.

Tocan,

I know that the search function works well but sometimes I find that it can take a LONG time to find what I'm needing. I'll add that long the way there is lots of interesting stuff.

I get the impression that your question was fundamentally about sharpening and secondarily about the diamonds . Here is one active thread that I just saw:

Maybe this will get you started.

Thanks guys, I will do some more reading of older posts and see if I have found the answers I am looking for...

My biggest question is do I slide the blade on the diamond hone, or do I do circles with the hone on the blade, does that make sense to you?

I have DMT benchstones (large) and I move the knife on the stationary stone. It sounds like you have some kind of sharpening device?? Maybe you could post a link to the pictures of the stones or sharpener.

Re: circles. I typically would sharpen in lines: parallel, perpendicular, or diagonal motions, giving equal time along the length of the blade.

TOCAN,
Nice pic and very helpful. Since I sharpen mainly striaght edges on benchstones I am not the person to help you. My suggestion is that you may wish to start a thread with a title something like:

Sharpening a Poliwog with a DMT Diafold (in the field)?

I've know there are guys who sharpen in the field with your type of knife/gear. If you get stuck send me an email and I can suggest a BF member.

Ps include the link to your pic:)
