Sharpening question and I need another knife...

Hi guys...longtime lurker here, and now I need some help, since I'm very inexperienced when it comes to sharpening/refinishing/etc. I have a Kershaw Blackout plainedge. My friend asked me to cut the antenna off his cellphone, and I asked him if it had metal in the part he wanted cut. He said no, and stupidly, I trusted him. Well, now I have a LONG flattened area on the blade, sort of like an extended, raised burr. How can I get rid of this? Would it be easier to send it back to Kershaw, considering it needs tip work done as well?

My second question is this. I want (not need =\) another knife. I want something decent-sized and STRONG, and relatively inexpensive. It will be an EDC, all-purpose knife. Not primarily for defense, since I have my G27 for that. I was thinking either a Spyderco Police (G10, ATS-55) or Endura (Zytel, VG-10.) Opinions/suggestions? Thanks!

I just picked up a CRKT M16, geat knife for the money, super fast to open with that thing that comes out of the end of the blade and acts as a guard when open. As for sharpening what sharpener do you have?

If it's really dinged up, I would start with a coarser stone. I use a blue (coarse) diamond stone for these situations, or a soft washita oil stone, just to re-profile the edge. It shouldn't take many swipes. If you use anything too fine, you will spend all day trying to remake your edge.

I second the M16. Get a spearpoint M16-03, it has much more utility potential than the tanto model. If you're willing to spend a little more, get an Emerson Mach 1. Very good all around folder.

I forgot to mention, I don't have any sort of sharpener or sharpening tools...what should I get? I need something for serrations and for plainedge.

I like the M16 but I distrust liner locks. That is part of the reason I'm not carrying the Blackout anymore. I'd prefer a strong lockback or a compression lock or something else of equal toughness.

get the spyderco sharpmaker 204 for easy and reliable sharpening. can't help you on the folder I like linerlocks. I will say taht I have found more utility use from the Tanto point than most other shapes.

The Lock on my M16 seems fine so far, and i have used other liner locks that have been fine.

I'll second the sharpmaker. I don't have one, but had one demonstrated for me recently, and looked pretty nice. Kinda pricey, $50 to 70$ range or so. I have a small assortment of Arkansas stones and some pocket-sized DMT diamond stones that work well, too. The DMT's run around $10 or so, and Ace hardware and Sears both carry them. But they don't do much good on serrations. For the knife, maybe a Buck 112 would work for you?

I took my CRKT M-16 Tanto and just re-profiled it to a clip-point and it's one great knife for the money...wolf.

Lately, I have just used one of those 20 buck "EDGEMAKER PRO" kits to do a 30-second finish job and it works!!!!

From your description of the damaged area, it sounds like you folded the edge back a bit. If you can borrow a long non-grooved steel, you might be able to straighten the blade before you begin sharpening it. I once had to repair and sharpen a paring knife that had been used to hammer barnacles off of sea shells. As cheap as the knife was, the woman who owned it claimed it was her favorite kitchen knife and that it needed to be repaired. The steel folded the edges back, a brass hammer flattened the blade out, and an Edgepro with a coarser stone re-profiled the dings where metal had been chipped out before it was sharpened and the edge polished. Yeah, yeah, I know, I know, eighty dollars labor for a two dollar knife!

Duckfsu,
Welcome to the Forums! :)

I don't know what to do with your Blackout, I should see it to know. Show it to some experienced sharpener...

As to new knife - I think BENCHMADE 551 Griptilian would match your specification just right.

SPYDERCO Sharpmaker is hard to bet, it's very nice device both for beginners and experienced but lazy sharpeners like myself ;)

I second that recommendation! I just got a 551 Griptillion and it is a very nice utilitarian knife for the money. The ONLY drawback I can find is the handle is just a shade too wide.

For sharpening I have both a Lansky and 204 Sharpmaker. Both will do an excellent job on anything EXCEPT a chisel grind. I had a nightmare with one of those.

I carried my CRKT M18-04 today for the first time because I figured I had to at some point, giving the BM710 and SERE 2000 a rest. I was just about to start a thread in the Review forum and saw this. As much as a couple guys recommended the M16 I recommend the M18. If you like reasonably priced ($54) liner locks I don't think you can go wrong. Good shape, fast one-handed opening using the index finger and wrist flick. Plenty sharp but I haven't seen how well it holds or takes an edge. I like it better than the Emerson Raven that was twice the price. The only downside is its carried point down. And doesn't take to a lanyard. You can tie one on but its either buried deep in your pocket if tied at the butt end or you can't open the blade if tied at the pivot end.
