Sharpening S30v Question???

Hello all,
I have several sebenza's and kitchen knives that I sharpen on my edge pro. I get them really sharp!! I just got a Strider.. I am trying to sharpen using the same angle I use for my sebenza's. It won't get even close to the sharpeness? Why? I know one is hollow and one is flat. Both are s30v. I repeat the same process for the 2 knives. Actually more time on the strider. Why won't this blade get as sharp as I want?

I think the Strider's edge is way thicker and you're not actually reaching the edge on your sharpener. So either sharpen at a more obtuse angle or grind the steel down to the angle that you have it at. If you do the latter, it'll take awhile if you don't have a belt.

Use a Sharpie or any other marker to color the edge of your blade. You'll be able to see exactly where your sharpener is making contact on the edge.

I totally reprofiled each of the blades to the angle I like best. The Edge pro is very aggresive, it is hitting the whole edge on both of the knives. I could give the strider a thinner edge then the sebenza but kind of takes away from the hard core aspect!

This problem is too advanced for me then. Hopefully one of the wise elders over here can chime in.

If you are getting all the way to the edge and deburring then maybe it has a bad heat treat? Maybe you can send it in to Strider and have them check it out. I just sharpened a Small Sebenza which was gifted to me (which I am gifting to my Dad), with a Wilson re-heat treat (as the original owner had a terrible time getting an edge with the factory heat treat) to 60.5 RC, and funnny enough it doesn't get as sharp as my factory Manix in S30V using the same techniques on each knife. The Small Sebenza also was reground by Tom Krein to a thinner than factory edge, which is MUCH thinner than the rebevelled Manix at the edge, which for me generally has made sharpening much easier than on thicker knives. Some knives just won't get as sharp as others, even in the same steel from high end companies.

ok...dumb question...but I thought the Sebenza cant be used on the Edgepro due to the position of the Thumb stud.

I have no trouble at all. I have seen a couple people make custom pieces out of plastic to fit with the thumb stud. I just put the thumb stud on the side of the platform when its face down. When face up the stone passes by milimeters over the top. Works perfect to me. Best sharpener I have ever used, or seen. I would highly recomened it to anybody who has a sebenza.

Some time ago I re-beveled a Strider SMF.

The best I could measure the out-of-the-box bevels, the bevels were in excess of 20 degrees - for an included-angle of greater than 40 degrees, and closer to 50 degrees included near the tip. I've seen other posts indicating that's about par for out-of-box Strider folders.

I put 10/15 degree compound bevels, using a coarse diamond hone to install the 10 degree bevels and a Spyderco gray ceramic for the 15 degree micro-bevels.

You'll need to remove a lot of metal to put final bevel of 30 degrees included or less.

Hope this helps!

Do you have a loupe? Looking at the edge with a loupe may solve the mystery.
