bought an edge pro sharpening system few mos ago - sharpened everything in sight - then i wondered about my straight razor - it worked fairly well with the 600 grit and the 3000 grit polishing tape - but it was an uncomfortable shave - i have my hot water tank set to 140 degrees and i use a dish cloth about 3 different times to set up my face before shaving - i use just the fairly new dial soap with the aloe vera or whatever's in it and i scrub it in my face with my hands - is what i use for shave cream - anyways - i have/had a 6000 grit water stone - well, i thot why not - i took the stone to the machine shop and had them cut it to the same size as my edge pro stones - they broke one and i ended up with 2 instead of 3 6000 grit stones - of course you cn see whats coming next - i sharpened my henckel (ebay 14 bucks a yr ago) and i aint gonna brag - but, you can cut atoms with the henckel - anyways i use a strop/strap i pulled out of the abandoned barbershop - its black on one side and has the canvas on the other - its about 3 1/2 inches wide 18 or so inches long - it works for me - cant understand why the edge pro system doesnt incorporate the 4 to 8000 grit stones - prolly cost to much - my edge pro sharpener was $183 with free shipping from a place az - i used a razor stone from the barber shop brown on one side an light color on the other - and i used water on it before i did the edge pro thingee - it was a pain in the A## to use the stone - i was never good with any stone, even with knives - but, i managed until i got the edge pro - dont really care about what anybody thinks about the system - it just werks for me - you may want to query other people before you invest any money in a high dollar system - it just works for me - and ya gotta adjust the edge pro system so it is at a flat angle before ya can sharpen the straight razor - so other experts may have to be queried before you jump on this system - the way i look at it - it has been recommended 4000 grit first then 8000 grit next then strop with paste and all that s### - 100 yrs ago they didnt have all that paste stuff and they - i dont believe had 8000 grit stones - but, thats just my thinkin - good super fine water or oil stone and a good quality smooth leather will get ya the shave of your life and will continue to do so till the day you croak with a good straight razor - one last comment - if you can use both hands to work the soap into you whiskers - there is no need for all those extras - i aint talkin about a full beard or a 2 inch growth on ure face - just the guy who shaves every 3 or 4 days - makes no difference about how hard your beard is - anyways thats my experience - try a straight razor - but, be prepared to spend a lot more time in front of the mirror then u would with a safety razor or electric razor - and for heavens sake practice before you jump into a fairly dangerous way of cutting off your whiskers- some cuts will not go away and you will be scarred for life if you aint careful - thats my comment for this thread
