Is using a sewn buffing wheel with tripoli dangerous to use for final sharpening? The reason I ask is that some guy's say not to use a buffer on a sharpened blade, and then some body else say's to use a buffer for the final sharpening.

A buffer is ONLY to knock off the final burr. Be very very carefull and use light strokes at this time. Normally one or two passes per side is all thats needed. More will dull the edge

If you go to a 2000 or a 1200 grit belt test your edge then. You may find you don't need a buffer at all. Make sure you sharpen on the slack of the belt not the contact wheel.

The warnings against using a buffer are for safety reasons. Although i believe the BEST edge can only be had using power equipment, a SUPER DUPER, more than adequate edge can be put on a blade without such equipment. A Sharpmaker won't turn your knife into a flying projectile like a buffer can.

The easiest money I make is from sharpening knives. I use the burr king with a fresh 320 belt and remove the wire edge with the cardboard wheel with white rouge. Takes about 1 minute per knife. I charge $1.00 per knife. Thats $60.00 per hour. The same as our plumber makes. Too bad I only sharpen a couple a day sometimes. Bruce
