Sharpmaker Sandpaper Experiment Question

Ok guys, I'm working on a little experiment, and I need some advice. I've been looking for some coarser rods for the Sharpmaker. I tried the ruby stones from Congress Tools, and I wasn't impressed with their quality. They removed metal well, but they didn't fit well in the slots like I had expected. Anyway, I had an idea the other night to make sleeves out of sandpaper that would slip over the Sharpmaker rods. I don't know if anyone has tried this before, but I'm interested to see if it would work. Although, I was wondering what type of sandpaper would be best. My local hardware store had the wet/dry and some for metal from 3M. I figured one of those two would be the best, but I wasn't sure. Does anyone have any suggestions of what type of sandpaper would be best? Any suggestions on the topic would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

the gray wet/dry is silicon carbide and lasts a bit longer than the brownish aluminum oxide open coat stuff.

Guys have been doing that for a long time here in this forum. Most just wrap the paper around the face of the rods, with enough extending around the sides for a clip to grab on to (paper binder clip, small shop spring clips, etc). I start with 280 or 320 and work up from there, stopping at 600 or 800 and going to the Sharpmaker medium rods.
