Ok, it's not really a tragedy, but I feel really stupid for doing it. Last night I was sharpening one of my kitchen knives on my Sharpmaker. As I went to switch from the medium to fine stones, I dropped one medium rod from elbow height (keep in mind I'm 6'3" tall) onto the concrete floor. I watched in slow motion as the rod fell and broke into 3 different pieces. It was a sad day for my Sharpmaker. Now I have to invest some cash into buying a new one. Sigh. Anybody else have this same situation happen?

I didn't break a stone but my friend did, he picked up my Sharpmaker and opened the top and tilted the base to have a close look and yep, 2 stones fell to the ground but one broke. I bought some replacement Sharpmaker stones from XXXX they were the least cost I found online (9 bucks) and they are not 100% Spyderco. They are a bit long and don't fit in the base as well as the right ones. So you will probably spend 12-13 on a stone so be sure its from Spyderco.

I guess I can find some good from this situation. I've wanted to try a Byrd Meadowlark G10 knife for some time now, but I didn't want to have to pay the shipping costs for just one $20 knife. Now I can combine shipping on the Sharpmaker rod and the knife. It'll be like a belated Christmas present to myself. :D

I didnt have one shatter like yours, but my son thinks the sound the brown ones make when banged together is funny. I must have left the base clamped to the counter and he took them out and chipped the crap out of the corners.

Yep. Exact same thing happened to me. I opened the top and one of the medium stones was'nt properly "clipped" in in the lower trays. It fell and broke into three pieces. I haven;t replaced it yet...I've been limping along with just one medium. They cost 8 bucks.

Get overnight shipping and make it an on time christmas present for yourself!!:D

You're not thinking hard-core enough.

Buy an entire new Sharpmaker, the Diamond stones, and the Ultra-Fine stones!

That way, you get the entire Sharpmaker system, plus an extra base to hold the two new sets of stones AND you get a set of spare fine stones PLUS a spare coarse one!

Voila! :D

I dropped the entire Spydie Benchstone on my floor once. Luckily, the plastic case cushioned it and neither case nor stone cracked

I like your thinking, but I don't have that kind of money. Besides, I've heard that the Diamond stones aren't worth the money, and I already have a set of Ultra-Fine stones. :D

Then I guess trying to convince you that you also need an Edge Pro is out of the question? :p

Good luck on finding the diamond rods. Spyderco doesn't even carry them!! I searched all over the internet and nobody seems to have them. I guess I'll have to give congress tools a try w/ their ruby stones.

I actually tried the Ruby Stones from Congress. I wasn't very impressed, but others have had good results. They cut very well, but the ones that I got weren't very even. One would sit in the slot with a perfect angle, while others would be very off. I managed to shim them in place, but it was a big hassle to set them up. If you do give them a try, I'd like to know how they work out for you.

Welcome to the club!:D:D

Damn near everyone that uses a Sharpmaker or Crock Sticks has dropped and broken one (or more:( ) at some time! :p:p

You can get the diamond rods here. I've read that they aren't worth the price- they actually cost more than the Sharpmaker kit!
