Sharpshooter Sheath Systems for RC-3/RC-4

A while back I had the pleasure of field testing a leather sheath made by Sharpshooter Sheaths for RAT Cutlery's RC-3 and RC-4. We did everything from dunk them in jungle water to actually pulling them apart to test the integrity of the stitching when wet. These sheaths were also sent into the jungle with the BNN film crew for the “Try Before You Die” TV show. They did not fail them nor did they even look used.

Sharpshooter Sheath Systems exclusive EEP (Extreme Environment Protection) was spot on with their claim of being waterproof. The leather did not seem to absorb any water after I left it soaking wet in a nearby jungle creek. I dried it off and left it in the sun while we were away doing something manly, again no wear from the sun. I have a desert hike in Arizona coming up and would be very curious about how it will respond to the hot sun and 115 F degree weather. I will be sure to let you know!

Reid, at Sharpshooter Sheath Systems does a very good job at quality control and when it comes to his product, he likes feedback that has anything to do with making a good thing even better. This is a stamp of a great American company with a long future ahead of them. Here are a few pictures of the new and improved RC sheaths available from Derrick at knivesshipfree.com.

Seems like the new sheath (right) is a little wider and robust.
The loop is a full 2 1/2" wide so it will easily slide over a Cartridge or Riggers Belt or you can use the supplied holes to easily attach any hardware with 1 1/2" spacing for MOLLE/ILBE compatibility.

man that looks so nice...that strap looks like a huge improvement. That handle sticks out like a sore thumb... so... bright. I can't wait until my RC4 comes in... :grumpy:

Great photos - thanks, bear!

Reid does a great job with his sheaths! I'm glad tosee him expanding his line.

Derrick only stocks Righty for now but some Lefty being made...Loving the Green/Orange RC's

OK, back from the Grand Canyon and I am happy to report the RC-3 Sharpshooter Sheath is fine. No wear at all. I like to gear test and sometimes it can seem dramatic but I like to give it to you guys straight. I kept the sheath on the dashboard the entire way up to the canyon and back, in the sun. I took the sheath with me down the Grand Canyon and strapped it to the outside of my pack where it was in direct contact with the heat and sun. It looked like I was carrying a sheath whose knife fell out, but it was empty to start with. The desert sun and 110 F temp. would certainly show some wear on a leather sheath. This is one tough sheath, jungle humidity and now Arizona desert heat has not disturbed the stitching or caused any cracks in the leather. What will I throw at it next?

I forgot, I plan on sending a Sharpshooter sheath to a guy I know in TN who does some "special missions" in Iraq.

bear, do you think the firesteel loop could be cut off of the sheath with no ill affects? I am really digging the sheath, just don't like the firesteel loop.Thanks.

Looking from mine, I don't see why not. I cut off the thigh tabs and it's fine.

My leather RC-4 sheath should be here today from Derrick. Now whether to put the orange/green or the green/tan in it? With the firesteel in the loop and a paracord wrap on the end, it should make a nice hiking/camping set up.

If you have a sharp knife. The firesteel loops are sewn into the welt. Cutting off the loop will not affect the sheath in any other way. :D

I don't know yet. We are evaluating the tooling costs now.

Originally they were planned, but they haven't flown off the shelf like I thought they would.

We will see.
