The Cold Steel SafeKeeper III:

"The Safe Keeper's come complete with a Secure-Ex® boot/belt sheath which features a friction fit retainment system to prevent loss and facilitate immediate access."

Unfortunately this sheath doesn't fit very well to a pair of jeans etc, when you pull the knife with one hand, you get the whole package in your hand - the knife AND the sheath!

Anything I can do about this? The sheath's in plastic and the clip (in plastic) isn't tight enough to stay in the jeans when pulled... from what I understand they used to sell this knife with a Kydex sheath... don't know if that's better and anyways it doesn't help me now since all I got is this "secure-ex" in plastic.

Is there anything I can do to this current sheath in plastic (MacGywer are you out there ;) ) or do I need to order another sheath :(

Also one more thing, the handle material is in Kraton (some rubber type material) and I does give a good grip, but it feels kinda rough for the hands, anything I can do to the handle to give it a more smooth grip, not as rough?

Hey Bladez....

What to do about the sheath...
Hmmmmm..

For one thing,,those plastic clips,,at least some of them Suck,,and Suck Bad..

You may have some options available..

Is the sheath kydex/concealex or is it injection molded zytel like substance like the OEM CRKT sheaths ??

If there is room on the side of the sheath,,like 1/2" or more,,you may be able to install a mini Tek Lok..
This will be for outside of the pants only..

If you would like to send it over I could see if I could retro the sheath for you..

Drop me a note and we can discuss your options..

Theres a couple of ways you may be able to do this..
By the sounds of it,, you may just need a good G-clip for IWB carry..

A picture would help if you had it..

Thanks for the input, I don't own a scanner or digital camera so it's hard to find good pics of it, here's a small picture from coldsteel's website:

http://www.coldsteel.com/safekeepers2.html

don't know if that'll help, I think the "secure-ex" is the same as Concealex.

the sheath is black plastic, with 8 holes around it, dunno what that's for... (4 on each side, and various positions, maybe it's for some kinda chain so you could have it around your neck or so) the knife fits pretty hard into the sheat, it requires a little force to get it out, and that's what makes it come off the jeans... dont know if after some use it will be easier to pull the knife and not need as much force and because of that the sheath won't come off at the same time..

imagine having a gun in a holster, and when you pull it with one hand, you get the holster still around the gun, that's not too cool :(

Hey Bladez...

Yaa it looks to me like a blade-tech sheath...

Since they stopped using Concealex,,and are now using Kydex,, I think Secure-Ex is what they may be calling it...Don't know for sure,,but this is what I suspect..

If there are eyelets all the way around,, it should be easy to mount a G-clip...

The reason there are eyelets,,is because,,the sheaths are molded one piece at a time,,then fastened together..

Most clips should be used with the use of a belt..Unfortunately with the type of retention synthetics have on blades,,clips don't hold the sheath enough to draw the knife without a belt..

Same goes for putting these types of sheaths into boots...
You'd better have your boots laced up pretty damn tight or your gonna draw plastic with that blade..

I did a boot knife for a Motorcycle Copper who had a piece of leather sewn into the boot..A belt loop of sorts..I used this loop to secure the sheath to the boot itself..
The knife and sheath stay in the boot Always and when he draws,,he draws steel Only..

Clips and synthetics,,unless there is a serious retention system in place,,or a belt being worn are useless...

Have you tried taking the clip off and using a static line ??
This works pretty good...

If you want I'll send you a G-clip and screws at N/C..You have to install it though..:)

Want to know my solution? Put a strand of paracord through each of the two loops by the mouth of the sheath, and then tie loops in them. Thread your belt through these, or tie them to a belt loop.

I wear a safe keeper II fairly regularly. If you have a belt on, I found the clip catches it. I've never had a problem. Of course if you dont have a belt, I'm not sure what to reccomend.

well i dont always wear a belt, that's the problem
btw, have you sharpen your safekeeper 2? mine came pretty sharp but im curious just how sharp it can get...

If you plan on this knife for EDC.., I'd contact Clay at:

http://www.BalisongXtreme.com

Clay makes absolutely incredible sheaths for IWB carry for Balisongs, but is a very creative guy! If nothing else he will give you the best solution.., or make you a custom version.

I second Normark's suggestion of a static line. I find that it works well on a variety of different knife/sheath combinations. All you need is something to tie it to, or tuck it under. Belt loop would do fine. Sheath and knife come from waist band, sheath stops, knife doesn't. Trust me, for the first few weeks you will be constantly amazed by this simple trick. Almost as much fun as the wave feature on an Emerson, but a bit slower to "reload".

I recently got a safekeeper III and I wear it upside down, with the handle facing the ground and the knife on the inside of my jeans with the clip facing outwards. I draw it by pulling down on the handle with my thumb then flicking it upwards into my hands.
