Sheaths--Who has been smoking crack at the factory!!!

I have purchaed 2 knives in the past week that have come with sheaths. I know the sheath is an extra goodie and we should all be "grateful" when we get one but I would like to say a few things.

BM 42 sheath: I have been pumped about this knife since it came out. I finally got one. I open the box and the sheath.....yugh! It looks like they took a sheath that was laying around for a knife 2" shorter and jammed this knife into it! It doesn't fit, velcro is exposed on the sheath a good 1/2". Mike Turber, call benchmade and make them use your sheath when it comes out. Oh, the humanity!!!!

Microtech LCC: Okay, first of all I don't know why they incluede a sheath with this knife in the first place. Oh, now I know, so they could sew a big ugly shark patch on the front of it. This is nice for discrete carry. I am sure the guy at the grocery store will think I use it to carry innocent non-descript multi-tool...not.

Rant Mode Off.

P.S. MT fans, please don't kill me.

Now there's a fellow Kansan that calls a sheath --a sheath! Where's all that quality control we've been told that is in place?

Hi, I talked to someone in a knife store about this very subject,(BM-42 sheath) & was told that Benchmade probably bought about a zillion of these sheaths to use on several different models. It almost fits,(to them) & that way they can save a chunk of money. I don't think it's right but it makes sense to me.

I hope that isn't benchmades excuse. If it is, I have lost all faith in the company. It sounds more like a Lynn Thompson excuse to me (CS Fans don't kill me)

The sheath on a BM42 is what it's supposedly designed to be carried in. If they put the same effort into their knives that they did into this sheath they would be made from Ginsu 2nd's with pop can tab pocket clips! Benchmade should be ashamed! The rest of the 42 isn't finished to their typical standards either.

Sheath's used to be considered equally important. Guess those days are over. I do have to say my Microtech sheath is very adequate and fits well, its just the "instrument of death" vibe that hurts it. I would like to carry either knife on my duty belt but neither fits the bill for the reasons stated above.

Not to exhaust the poor guy any more than he already is, but don't forget that Gary Graley is only an email away.

Overall - what it comes to velcro, I think it's pefect in babies diapers, but nowhere else...

Must be some high-falutin' diapers to have Velcro tabs! Ours just have the tape-like stuff.

Anyhoo, not to defend the BM42 sheath (I've got one too and agree it's like trying to squeeze me into one of my adolescent suits), but Travis at Benchmade and I were talking about this very thing the other day. He said that the sheath would eventually stretch into shape. The sheaths were designed to be a compromise in size to fit a variety of models.

Okay - maybe it's not the same Velcro as used in sheaths. But quite similar like that. At least Libero here by us uses that. Don't know about US...
Did somebody say this is off-topic...?

For the price of the knives, Buck still provides excellant sheaths with their knives.

I have a couple knives that came with nylon sheaths. I will not use these sheaths.

Nylon is good for many applications, this is not one of them. I wish the companies would offer $1.50 off the price for no sheath. $1.50 is more than they are worth....both to them and me.

While I am not a fan of plastic, concelex or zytel seem a better option for fixed blades...and concelex or leather for folders.

Most folders today have good clips, that is my option...and if it's not...pants do have pockets.

I did order a custom leather sheath from Gary Graley. My Benchmade 42 Bali is looking forward to getting into it.

BTW, talk about a craftsman, Gary is about the most accomodating artisan I have ever met. He sent me 7 emails to work out all the details on the project!!! If I am happy with it (I know I will be) there will definitely be more to follow!

I have an early LCC sheath that is without the shark. It is new, never used. I wouldn't mind having a shark one. Let me know if you want to trade.

I was dissapointed that my LCC was delivered with a plain sheath, not a "shark" logo.I have actually been trying to order one. Geez, whats wrong with me?

.

I guess one man's lame sheath is another man's gold mine! I was probably a little hard on MT for the shark logo on the sheath. Maybe it's not so bad after all! However, my BM 42 sheath still blows big smelly chunks

. Gary Graley should be rectifying that problem soon though.

Ferret, are you pissed about the clip on the MOD sheath? My sheath is beautiful, the clip as from the factory sucks. The maker, Frank Sigman, PO Box 589, Granite Falls, NC, 28630 solved the problem for me with an $8 solution that I love to death. he will be solving the crappy sheath problem for my Busse Basics (what the hell were they thinking with that Busse Kydex?)

Sigman specializes in fixing the oversight of other people (and why would I carry a clip-folder in a pouch???) Anyone want the sheath for my tempest? Send me a buck for shipping.

Now the Busse Mean Street I have, very nice rig-work, took a couple days to get conversant, and now it's easy street.
