I knocked my bit loose while harvesting some fatwood and cool wood for carving. Look close and you can see the bit has moved. The wood is so hard it was making the hatchet ring, like I was hitting metal.

I figured I would give her a shine while off the handle.

When mounting a bit I like to get the bit in place, then drip 2 ton epoxy into the wedge area. After that, drive the wedge in, grind it down flush with the handle, drive in the circular wedge, and fill all gaps with more epoxy. They don't come loose.

Great little hatchet!!!!

Who makes that?

The Husqvarna line is made by Wetterling, but the fit and finish is much better than their name brand stuff. Wetterling was bought by the guy that owns Gransfor Bruks. The Husquies have a GB geometry to them. Here is a pic of my mini Wetterling next to the Husqie. The thinner geometry of the Husqie is easily seen. The Husqie is on the right. I like the Husqie so much the mini is a shelf rider.

The husqie can also be found for about $45, and the Wetterling is now around 65. $45 dollars and an hour of work for this hatchet is a bargain. Here is the best place I have found for them. http://www.jackssmallengines.com/husqvarna_axes.cfm
Some question the Swedish axes and wonder if they can handle North American hardwoods. This little hatchet has had no problems.
She's a chip thrower.

I have been using the Husqie for almost a year and love it.

They are doing that on the newest run. I think they are trying to save a few bucks. My friend just got a new Husqie hatchet and it only has the one wedge as well. I would recommend you go to sears and pic up a mounting wedge and put it in. I knocked my bit loose with the circular wedge in place and needed to remount. Then again, i'm not nice to my tools. :D

Sick hatchet head, that design is really ideal. Sexy maker's mark too. I may need to do some research and hunting on one of these...

Do any of the big box stores have these?

I found some in an ACE Hardware store, but they were priced about $25 more than the online store. Shipping on it is only $9-$10. And it came in 3-4 days. Worth the wait to me. Only draw back is that you can't handle it before buying. :D

I have fixed several loose headed axes and hatchets with epoxy. All are holding up well. I would just recommend doing the job in the wintertime (dry season) so that the wood in the handle has shrunk to its smallest dimensions. If you can't wait that long, dry the wood in slow oven.

Thank you very much. I just ordered a hatchet, an axe, and a replacement handle. The price including shipping is the same or less than a single Gransfors product. Nothing against Gransfors, of course, but this seems like a pretty good deal.

BTW, did it come with a leather sheath?
