Well, I picked up the shipment today (Saturday). The reason for the delay is a bit funny, but does illustrate some of the problems associated with importing.
What happened was that the shipment was held pending a USDA inspection in Dallas - the first US airport the shipment arrived at before transfer to my airport. The USDA inspector had randomly flagged our shipment for inspection to make sure we didn't have bugs and rats in the boxes. Well, when he broke open one of the three crates, he didn't find bugs, but he found . . . KNIVES!!!
Now, khukuris are classified as "Handicrafts" by US CUSTOMS. Of course, the USDA guy didn't know this, so he flagged the shipment for inspection by customs. I called Customs, and the head inspector, when I told him what had happend, said "I have no interest in this shipment" and immediately called the USDA guy to release the shipment.
The bottom line was that there was a slight delay. But since I was having so many problems with this shipment, I had the airline fax me the shipping documents, and I had the shipment "pre-cleared" by customs here in Virginia. So, when the shipment arrived this morning, I was able to go collect the goods.
How do they look? STUNNING. The two most exciting new models are the 18 inch Panawal and the aluminum handled WWII. I'll have to go buy a new digital camera today or tomorrow, so you'll all have to wait a couple of days for the photos. I will be re-doing the website to accomodate the number of models we now carry, so watch out for a new look at Gurkha House.
And yes, Steven . . . after long last, your kukuris arrived!
And they aren't 10 feet long either!
