Hey all,

I remember someone posting a picture of a cut they suffered while working on a knife, but I don't remember who it was. I wasn't working on a knife but I cut into my palm last month and I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar cut and how long it took to fully heal. The tissue has scarred over but after doing some chopping it's been sore so I guess it's still healing on the inside. Here's a picture of the placement and size.

Jose what' up. It was me. It's all sealed up now and better but still a little sensitive. Yours seesm to be healing nicely. That first pic is a nasty one WOW ! Hey, you play with sharp things, you get cut. That's our lot my friend. Yours is about 2 inches above where mine was. Mine stretched from the top of my left wrist into the fat of my thumb....OUCH! It's something to be proud ofin the end. We don't shy away after we're cut but instead strive to make a better knife and do it without being cut but always expect that at some point we will get cut. We have to suffer for our art in some way or another :D How many stitches ? Good luck bro....Peace.....RDT

Heck of a way to add a new lifeline, Jose! Glad to see you are healing nicely, though. Yep, it is our lot to pick up a few nicks in the shop. I got a real DUH! I accidentally stuck myself in the wrist because of being in a hurry to grab something in the shop on the way to my truck. Hurry and stab myself. Duh, again! My wife (who sometimes reminds me of her mother) was more surprised than I was. She says I never hurry at anything.

Jose nice one
I looked at the first picture and was going to say put your pants back
on please ...what a rash  :D :D :D :footinmou

just kidding
that one will be knotted up for a while

life line,, I have one that extends my right life line
almost double,, maybe I'll live to be 160 :D
there's a short space between them that may have been when I
had my emergency appendectomy or
when I cut my leg with a chain saw  that left a mark...:( :D

RDT,

It took 9 stitches to close it back up. The first picture shows the bottom half of the cut. I was bandaged up by some paramedics so didn't get a chance to take a photo until the Doc removed them. Of course, once I was in the emergency room the Doc confiscated my camera, but I managed to sneak a quick shot while she was out looking in on someone else...:D

John,

Ouch, did you hit any major blood vessels? I knew it was going to be bad so was worried for a few seconds before I examined the wound. The fact that there wasn't any blood squirting out helped to calm me down. I got a cut in a bad spot on my wrist about a decade ago. The blood spurted out for about 3 or 4 feet, got some on the ceiling. That was scary!

Graymaker,

Chainsaw injuries... :( I'd probably faint...:D

A little over a year ago I cut my finger on a 1 X 30 belt. Still don't have any feeling in that area. I got it pretty good. Took hours to stop bleeding.

I haven't been cutting myself on knife edges lately but still succeed in stabing myself once with each knife.

Jose damn bro, mine was only 7 stitches. I went back to the doc to have them out. He took out 4 and it opened up, it was just too soon. So he butterflied and glue some bandages over it and I waited another three weeks and just pulled them out myself. Screw the damn doctors ! It was fun and kind tickled. Where in NYC do you live ? I'm in Sunset Park Brooklyn. Peace.....RDT

I think belt cuts hurt worse than a clean knife cut.I was sharping one of my knive and some how I cut my thumb,I did not notice I did it until the blood had dried on my thumb.
Now a belt cut burns and burns, and the pain just don't go away
I have 2 burn on my finger nail and one on my knuckle at this point
I guess it is par for the course.:D boy my thumbs take a pounding

I have 30 stitches in my hands from "shop" accidents over the years. They know me by my first name at the emergency room (also for the burns).

Taking up knifemaking has not improved my record. While I haven't yet accumulated more stitches, I ground off my finger tips and parts of nails more times than I care to remember. Sometimes I think this is just more fun than I can handle......

Nathan, It did a little later. The most annoying thing is the dumbness. I think as time has gone by a very little bit of feeling is very slowly coming back. Either that or I'm just getting more used to not feeling anything there.

In cuts on the extremities if you experience massive blooding, just keep your arm high up. This drains the blood from the limb, reduces blood pressure and leaves blood the time to coagulate and close the vessel in case of vein injury, or greatly reduces blood loss in case of an injuried artery.

I opened up my left thumb form the first knuckel to below the second. Took 32 stiches to close as it flaped the skin in a large v.I was cutting a small peice of Cherry with a table saw. Had all saftey measures in place. Blade guard, blade set 1/4 above work and was using a push stick. We couldn't figure out how I got cut till some one looked at the wood and founs a chunk of me on the corner. It had hit a small knot and spun around and the corner of the wood was what cut me.

RDT,

I'm in the Bronx, maybe we can set up a shop tour sometime? I took my own stitches out too, it did "tickle" a bit.

I do have my share of scars, but I've never had any missing chunks of meat or anything bone deep, except for a few on my knee caps. Maybe I'm too accident prone to be a knifemaker, I can only imagine how many parts I'd be missing after a couple of years...:D

Jose, cool. Drop me a line when you have time. That sounds like fun ! PEace.....RDT

Ever seen those metal mesh gloves? Wonder if they would suck for grinding? I was thinking about getting a pair and making a stainless(I have a source for cheap and/or free marine stainless) steel box with thick plexi for buffing knives. Kinda like a sandblaster box except have a buffer it it. I don't even have a buffer yet but I keep reading how dangerous they are and am paranoid. Now this thread has me thinking how close I have got my fingers to the sanding belt. Thinking about it makes me KNOW that it has to be like a bad road rash. Especially with rough grit.
I have plenty of scars and pain doesn't actually bother me that much but I am just now getting old enough to start thinking more safely. Turned 34 one week ago today. :D

Gloves are okay, those kevlar cut resistant gloves. I have them but guess what ?.....all the finger tips are ground off now. They aren't grind resistant and they aren't puncture resistant. If the tip of the knife goes in, it just goes in without a problem and you will still be punctured. There good more because they resist heat better. They say up to 700 degrees or something like that ? I doubt that hight but well enough.

I use cheap leather work gloves. The kind with the double thumb and forefinger are something like $40 for a dozen. Pretty thick leather, too. I just toss 'em when they get cut up or wear out. They aren't super, but once you get used to using them, you can't work without them.
