About a year ago, I made a chef's knife with a nice stabilized thuya burl handle as a cake cutter for my son's wedding. I had envisioned it being used for one or two of his weddings and mostly sitting in the presentation box the rest of the time. WRONG. It gets used daily. Tip one. Don't assume a use. Presume all possible use / abuse.

He decided to store it in a knife block on the counter. It had no bolster and eventually, smacking into the block, the thuya chipped. Tip two - a bolster on anything that might go in a block.

Well, maybe even all of his weddings but not if he keeps breaking it.
