What did you find at SHOT that made you take notice?

The two that come to mind (knife related) are the Ontario colaboration RTAK (~$100 retail) and the Benchmade Kitchen knife set (~$400 retail).

The Ontario RTAK will be a 1095 knife that is a close "clone" of the one Newt Livesay is making. Availabiity should be better as will the price point on the street.

The Benchmade Kitchen knife set will popular for the "high end" kitchen knife shopper if they can market it properly. The 3 piece set features a 440C blade with a very attractive handle scale combination of brown and grey. At first the two appear to be dovetailed together but, it's not that simple. One scale runs the full length of the grip with the other is dovetailed in and bonded in giving it a look like a colored spacer. I probably haven't described it very well but, it's way cool.

There's lots of other stuff that I'm sure I missed or, just don't remember at the moment considering the late hour and the long drive I just finished.

Hi Sid,

I'm one weary SHOT Show exhibitor ("wasted" or "spent" is more accurate after only four hours sleep each night and only about five and a half hours a day in my hotel room). I'd love to be able to say "I saw it all." In reality, I can only say "I saw nothing." :( But it was a very fulfilling experience. I've heard words of some nice new stuff being introduced this coming year. I'm saving up my "pennies!" I'll need a lot of those!

Sorry I'm not of more help. :)

Here is a pic of the kitchen knives from Benchmade.

Well, that's the MSRP, I think. Should be a little lower priced on the street.

Sid,

Good meeting you at SHOT. The RTAK will probably come in around an 89.95 suggested retail price. The sheath will be cordura with a small pocket to store gear in. I have to say the RTAK was WELL received by all the folks who came by the Ontario booth. A lot of orders were taken and it will soon be in all the major knife distributors hands, both US and overseas.

We are about to finalize a joint deal between Ontario and Randall's Adventure and Training which will inject some new blood and new designs into their line. So look for new projects coming soon - good things around the corner!

Jeff

Any guesses on the street price of those BM kitchen knives?

I'm in the market for some. Might be worth waiting for...

Mike

My guess on street price for the BM kitchen knives is ~$300 which would be about 75% of retail and put them just under a small knife block set of German knives from Wustof or Henkels. While this may seem high, once you get them in your hands and actually look at them and feel them in hand, I think you will realize they are reasonably priced for the quality they offer. They are certainly finished better and more attractive then the common German lines offered at the mass merchants. This is of course, my personal opinion and things may change between now and when they are actually available on the street. Also, I don't think you can match what these knives offer from a custom knife maker at anywhere near the price they will be offered at. These are serious high end knives, not something to let sit in the bottom of the sink after your mom / girlfriend / housemate / etc. slices something for a snack.
