I tried a cord wrapped handle on mine for awhile. Mainly was thinkin' that it really thinned the knife down, and would make it a bit easier to carry concealed. Was also a nice thought as far as grip retention. Good news is that it is hell bent secure in retention, definitely a way to go if you work in alot of inclement weather, get around alot of blood, etc. Bad news was that if I did any real amount of hacking, chopping, or heavy usage at one time without gloves I'm positive I'd wind up with some VEEERY nasty blisters.
So, for the time being I'm back to the standard issue plastic grips. Which is cool...I guess....pretty boring, but quite effective for heavy use...
If I ever find the money and more BK 5's I'd like to take at least one and take the factory finish off of it, and recoat it with Black-T or some such. Sounds wierd exchanging a black finish for a black finish, but I can't help but wonder if it may even make the cutting efficiency even better since the Black-T would be smoother, and less crinkly.
The Jerry Fisk Convex edge would be a given....
Would also like to get a nice set of Ironwood slabs (or some other pretty kinda wood) put together for it. Something that would perhaps be a little thinner, and have just a little checkering, to better split the difference between iron grip retention and blisters Vs. user friendliness with no blisters.
Also think a good quality leather sheath would be nice for one.
Of course, for that matter, I think that exact blade style would be awesome in a five inch blade (yes, I've seen pics of the BK-10 but it just aint the same.)
while I'm letting my mouth (typing fingers) go run away I think it'd be real awesome if they ever re-introduced it. Even if they had to do some chincy screwy little mod so they can say "NEW AND IMPROVED BK 5!!!"
Aint no doubt I could find room in my collection for at least another three or four of them to tinker and play with....
Now then...just for the sake of clarity...While I mention all these changes and stuff, I think the BK 5 is simply freaking awesome just as it sits. Far and ahead one of my favorite knives, and no doubt my favorite big knife. But...I guess it's just human nature to wanna tinker with our favorite toys...
