Should I Get the ESEE-6 or the Becker BK7

I put up a thread before about whether I should get a ESEE-6 or a Kabar Becker BK7. I was set on a ESEE-6, but the idea of getting either fixed blade was pushed back for a-while because I used up the money I had saved for them on another item... but now I have money again to spend on either knife. So lets get to the part I need help on again.

I am obviously looking into either the Kabar Becker BK7 or the ESEE-6. The uses for either one are what most do with their fixed blades; chopping, battoning, whittling, etc. From what I learned from previous thread I posted the BK7 superseded the ESEE-6 in all of these categories except maybe the whittling. The ESEE-6 on the other hand has great ergonomics, micarta handle scales, a kydex sheath (my favorite part), and top of the line customer service... but can still do the tasks listed above with maybe slightly more effort (correct me if I wrong).

If I went with the BK7 I'd most likely upgrade the nylon sheath to a kydex sheath (at the very least a $40 upgrade that would put me at almost the same price as the E-6), but probably not upgrade to micarta handle scales. If I went with the ESEE-6 I'd have all of the 'accessories' already, but may be at a slight disadvantage mainly for chopping. Another thing is that the price tag on the 7 (w/o the kydex upgrade of course) is around 40 bucks cheaper than the 6, but is still lacking the 'accessories' listed above.

Many have told me to just go get both, but I really just want one good fixed blade knife for my collection and for my uses. So what I really need are some good opinions for which to get and why I should get the one you suggest. Feel free to expand on anything I said up above and PLEASE give me some ideas for which knife I'll be most happy with!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did a weekend Primitive Skills class and the ESEE-6 worked for everything from batoning a log into smaller pieces, to turning those pieces into the parts of a bow drill kit.

I hate nylon sheaths, and love the ESEE warrantee. It's an easy decision

Thanks for the reply!! That's one for the ESEE!

If you are serious about the sheath upgrade then just get the ESEE. Either knife is going to serve you well but the ESEE's are a bit more refined for sure.

Thanks for the reply!! I'm gonna give that to the E-6 as well.

Neither of those is a chopper, IMO. If you want to compare choppers between the two brands, look at the Junglas and the BK-9 (or possibly the BK-2 when you hold by the handle swell). Also, while you are correct when you say (about the ESEE) "top of the line customer service" the same could certainly be said of the Becker. It's not really a selling point for one over the other - both are about equivalent.

Both of those are great knives. I like the Becker better but if both are in your price range, I'd pick the one that looked best to me. You can't go wrong with either.

ESEE6.

Becker makes a great product, but compared to my Beckers, I carry my ESEEs daily and the BKs get left on the shelf. The ESEEs come from the factory with much nicers edges (in my experience), much nicer sheaths (I can't stand the foreign-sourced sheaths that come with Beckers) and much nicer handles (micarta, whether linen or canvas, is much better than any type of hard plastic). I understand that you can, and I have, upgrade the handles and sheaths, but it's rather inconvenient to do that for your every knife purchase.

ESEE has been getting all my knife money as of late. Jeff and Mike, and everyone else involved, take care of you and get you a great knife.

ESEE, I owned both and sold off the 7 a week after getting the 6. The ESEE Is much more comfortable In the hands.

Either one is a great knfe from a great manufacturer. I prefer the handles and sheath on the ESEE 6.

Neither is really a chopper though. Just not enough blade weight for that.

Both are great with a good following but the ESEE wins hands down. I have spent very little time with a BEcker. That's because I run back to my ESEE's.

Hello, i vote for the 6, i have the 6 and it is my favorite of the ESEE line. It has perfect balance, feels great in the hand it looks heavy but it is just right. The coating on the blade is tough as nails and lets be honest its a wicked looking knife:thumbup:. tough as nails, shaving sharp and holds it.
And most important it is backed up by a Great group of people....... fabulous warranty, fit n finish is:thumbup::thumbup:.
NUFF said. Hope this helps.:D
P.S. i own beckers also.

dont have a becker but have handled one...i have a 6 and love it. i vote for the 6.

the bk7 and esee6 arnt really to compartive the 7 i believe was designed as combat first and woodscraft second... the 6 is just the oppisite, the proper comparitive blades of are the bk2 vs. esee6 which are designed to fill the same roles.. so i vote esee6 over bk7... but bk2 over both...

bk9 for your chopper..

bk7 is my vote, the RC-6 is a damn sweet knife though.......

Thanks for all the replies guys!!!!!!! Looks like I'm gonna be getting myself a new ESEE-6!!!!! (the one I really wanted anyways)

Good choice. I have owned both, still own a 6. Both are good knives, but the 6 just feels better in the hand to me while the BK7 was a bit blocky for my taste. The BK7 was a knife i really did like, but it wound up going overseas a few years ago with a friend that was in the military.
