Anyone have any custom ones? Collect good qty ones or just like them to look at and/or throw. Heres a photo of one I found in a weapons cache in Iraq in 2003. I had about 9 , but being a good NCO I shared with my soldiers.

You'd probably get more responses in thr throwing forum.

You found them in a weapons cache in Iraq? As in they were planning to possibly use them against you? That sounds ridiculous, I'm not doubting you, just that who ever put them there had been watching too many kung fu movies.

I used to make throwing stars out of plate steel with an electric nibbler and then put edges on them with a bench grinder- they worked great! You can make any sort of gonzo shape into a throwing "star" if it has enough sharp parts to it. I had a couple of little rabbit-shaped throwing "stars" I made that were awesome. I think I lost or gave away every single one, though. It's hard to keep track of "ninja stars" once you start throwing them outside. They like to bury themselves if you get drunk and start whipping them around.

Nice shuriken you got there. I wonder what was the iraqi thinking of doing with it...

Bet a 5.56mm round is wayyyyyyyy........ more powerful then the shuriken.

Interesting, it is a shaken or hira shuriken, shuriken are spikes. Still a neat looking piece.

Is there an agreed upon right way to grasp and throw a Hira Shuriken? There seems to be an endless variety of shapes, sizes, and throwing styles; and, not nearly enough competitive events by which to sort it all out.

It probably depends on the ryu. I know of several ways to throw them, and there are probably ways to throw them I've not seen.

Then all I have to do, is to start my own "ryu", and whichever way works for me would be fine. :)

If you are studying a traditional Japanese art and want to learn how that school teaches shurikenjutsu, then you'd have to learn that style. If you just like throwing them, you might want look at the different methods and figure out which style works best for you.

Stephen Hayes and Robert Bussey both have videos on the shuriken, and Bussey's shows more techniques. Michael Janich has a video on throwing many types of weapons.

Yup! that's me. :)

I grew up when these things were at the height of popularity and it never occurred to me to throw one. Then a few months ago someone mentioned throwing stars in passing, and it struck me that of all the edge toys out there, throwing stars had never even entered my consciousness. I even remembered I still had a couple from the 1970s filed away under "Holloween". I dugged them up, and gave them a first toss.

To me its just a fun backyard alternative to darts. But, that doesn't mean that there isn't a sound technique for using them, nor a preferred design that actually works.

One thing you have to like about the stars is no handle hits. It sometimes seems like wherever I stand I am half a rotation from perfect. Alot of people give stars a hard time for not being authentic but I could care less. One interesting thing I read was stars were sharpened "things that hold the wheels on carts" which were often decorative(think 11th century dubs and spinners)

A few years back I had a set of Tenshin throwing darts, they are really great and have excellent penetration. It would seem like they would be easy to make, they would look soo good in cable damascus!

according to the old draeger book, the two main positions in throwing a shuriken are while on the run (especially to your rear) and while hidden with minimum movement.
