Sickle, and Sythe -- new ones or fossils?

I know this isn't an axe but felt this subforum might be ok to ask in.
I am looking for a well made, but not too expensive sickle and a sythe for cutting grass around edges. Not looking for antiques. Just want this stuff -- at least the sickle. Looked on the bay but looks like most people thought of antiques.

Sources for new ones? Are these actually considered fossils?

Ask on the Himalayan Imports forum here for a hasiya. That is the Nepalese sickle, very similar to our traditional forms. There has got to be some agricultural website that sells sickles at least, if not scythes, I just don't follow them.

In the Slavic languages, sickle is "serb" which is where the Serbian people get their name -- they were farmers.

I have a Himalayan Imports hasiya on order for the wife. HI makes a quality product, excellent to deal with and very addictive.

Nothing wrong with working antiques if you find a good price, keep looking at swap meets and flea markets. but the other stuff looks good too.

They are extremely useful. There are numerous blades for different applications. Different snaths also. This is a good site, their prices are better than others I have seen.

I use one on my property regularly.

+1 for a great company!

Also, it's not a scythe or sickle, but Imacasa makes a machete called a "machete de suelo" that's designed for cutting grasses. It has a bend much like a spatula right at the handle to help make horizontal cuts low to the ground without having to stoop so much.

Clickety click!

Lehman's and Lee Valley both offer current production full and hand sized sickles + repair parts.

if the edges you are planning on cutting have flat ground, it would be hard to beat a scythe.when the summer's were dry i use to scythe my parent's back acre.if the grass is tall and the ground is uneven, there is a good chance of catching the tip on the ground and damaging your scythe. i have no experience with a sickle, but they look more appropriate for uneven ground.
