H.H. BUCK must have used the Camillus rope knife to make the 117. Here is a 117 and a Camillus rope or sailor's knife from around WW11. I guess this is why they say to have it authenticated before you buy it. The bails are different. The Camillus has the correct one.

Hi,

Are you referring to a 117 (body text) or a 317 (title)?

Thanks for clarifying this - Joe

Hi, I'm referring to a 117. The first BUCK folding knife, made around 1946. Actually H.H. BUCK just made the blades and put them into this handles from surpless knives.

How many [real] 117's are out there?? One recently showed up on the bay without the bail, and as far as I know it's the only one to ever show up..

Clint,
This is my 117 story. I knew they were very rare but thought I needed one because it was Bucks first slipjoint, sort of 'Holy Grail".
In last 12 years I have seen two that sold for as much as a nice new fancy shotgun. I missed one on Ebay that was a little rough but I was too cheap in bidding and it went for a hair over 200. I gave up and decided I could better use such money for my 300 collection holes. When Jerry's knife showed up I contacted him and let him know I was supporting his quest and would not be involved. I stand on that noble hill still but do feel a tremor now and then.

You never know if I keep a eagle eye I may find one in a pile of junk on the cheap, just like I did on the salesman proptype 317. Fakes are becoming possible to encounter so anyone take heed in Jerrys example on the bail size and studying the blade shape and rivets used.

Also, it looks like a brass pivot pin was used in the 117 whereas not so in other makes. DM
