Is anyone using a double bitted axe for felling now and care to comment on a quality one vs a single bit. They were never used around here, always just single bit.

I have an un-named Swedish felling double bit, a Sager Chemical 1922, and a True Temper on the way. Still getting around to putting handles on them.
Alberta Ed has lots of experience with double bits but he was on holiday and then moving to the Yukon in search of more trees. We should be hearing from him again soon.

I bought a couple of double bit felling heads awhile back as well. It will be interesting to finally have a look at the theory in practice.

Eventually I'll get around to it!
I'm expecting a large variation in performance just based on the profiles of the heads alone. I'm sure that lots will come up other than that though.

The profile on the double I have now is decent, not what I would want ideally but better than average. It is 1/4" thick at 2" back, in the scallops but thickens a but more than I would prefer in the middle. The edge also needs about a half hour or so of work.

I should work well on soft woods, but lack penetration on the harder ones. I am considering altering the profile of one bit for hard wood work, however if I do too much grinding it will throw the balance off. That might be worth looking at on its own after using it as new.

I have the GB double with 35" handle. Unfortunately, the largest single GB I have is the Scandinavian, so I can't make a direct comparison of large singles vs. large doubles. All the other large singles I've used were so inferior to the GBs that it wouldn't be fair to compare.

I've dropped a couple 8-12" trees with the GB. I've also chopped up some logs, rather than sawing, just for fun. It performed great but, as noted above, I have no basis for evaluatiing it against a comparable single.

One thing that did not work was a friend's suggestion to leave a sheath on the edge not being used (for safety). About the third impact was enough to pop the snaps and send it flying.

never used a double bit for felling. I consider mine lighter duty.
