Ok, since I opened my big mouth, thought I would back it up. I propose a skills section with JK knives pictured. It is for fun only, so don't bring flamethrowers!

I know I suck at knots, cordage, edibles. I can however make fire, cook, put up a tent, and drink beer. Should be no shortage of those sort of pics.

I love gear threads so if you want to share your stuff, how you pack it, tips and tricks, whatever, feel free. I LOVE to LEARN! If anyone out there decides to be a jerk and rip on anyone (not saying anyone who hangs here will, just throwing it out there since I have seen it happen a lot in WSS), expect me to grind on you for being a jerk. ;)

Let's have fun and show off our JK knives and teach each other a thing or two. Or three.

My first JK. A kephart.

Hey Rockywolf, can you tell me where you got your curved knife and what you had to pay to get it? I've been looking for one to make some spoons with but, there doesn't seem to be a lot of them out there. The ones that I have seen so far they want $85.00 and up for them! Didn't want to buy a manufacturing company, just a knife to try make some spoons with. I knew I should have taken some photos of the spoons and bowls that Teddy makes. I guess I will have to do that the next time I am down to visit with him. Thanks!

i don't have one yet... but recently in W&SS someone mentioned that a $3 hoof knife from a tack shop will work. you can find several online, or just hit the local farm and feed shop in your area. i'm gpnna follow up on this lead locally and see what i can find... but that may just turn into an adventure in burning gas and getting nothing for it. but if you have rough feet or hands it's a good time to pick up a tub of Corona ointment.

i've seen some sell in the exchange here for $40 or $50 for custom knives, but they are not very common.

and ragweedforge, com has several of the scandi "bent knives" starting at around $30

Great post Rockywolf. I really like the way you included beer drinking as a skill. I consider myself competent in many things and an expert at none.

I have no idea where I got mine, sorry. I can't stand it because it is double edged and I can't push on it for fear of a cut. If you want it, PM or email me and I will GIVE it to you.

If I had a camera handy I could of shown my firestarting skills when I caught my jeans on fire a while back. I guess you all will have to settle on my eating and beer drinking skills on Saturday.

That's actually a good thought John. A beer thread would be a good idea. Favorites and why.
I'm hitting the woods Sunday and will post some skill pics. I've been working INSANE lately but my Sundays ARE MINE ;) (and the Wife's and Kids).

OK Rockywolf, I would like to try it out. I will try to e-mail you and work things out off the thread!

Thanks!

Hi Rockywolf! Just wanted to let you know that the curved knife got here today in my mail. Thanks very much for that. It looks like it might be awhile before I can get out to the garage to use it. I go in tomorrow morning for surgery on my left knee, so it will be several weeks before I will be able to get around very well. I will be banded to the house for that time. I really appreciate you sending that my way though. As soon as I can get out and use it and check it out, I will let you know what I think about it. So, I will be in touch.

Take care,
JK#36

You are welcome. If you don't like it, send it to Fixer, he had inquired about it too.

Heeeeyyyy Rockywolf! I finally got out and got to play with the curved knife this afternoon. I spent about two hours on this spoon today. I think it looks pretty good so far for my first time! I think the knife is fantastic! Sharp little booger too! I went out and cut me a piece of wood off of a piece of walnut limb that I had grown in my back yard several years back. Had to cut the little tree down when we found out how bad they are for everything else. Walnuts are a tree that you really need a lot of space to grow in your yard, and ours is not that big. Anyway, I have not touched this piece of wood with anything but this curved knife you sent me! The spoon will only be for looks and not for anything else. When I really get serious I will get me a nice fruit tree piece. It's looking like this piece of wood might make a pretty nice looking spoon though. I got online this evening and made an order for another curved knife and some other Mora Knives from RagweedForge. Hopefully I will get that order in next week some time. I am looking for the new knife to help this one along. The new one is only sharp on the one edge but, I like this one for being able to go back and forth with. It will take off the biggest part of your material for you in a fair hurry. I thank you again for sending this to me, I love it. Is there anything I can do for you? Here's a couple of photos, one of my spoon started, and the other of some accessories that you should probably put your hands on if you don't already have them.

A glove and a thumb cover.

I also use that green gauze tape that sticks to itself, like they use a lot of in the factories. I wrap my thumb with that a few times first then, put the thumb cover on and you are pretty well protected. That glove goes on your other hand to protect it! You do just have to be careful as with all knives! That is funny to me because, the old woman always cringes when I pick up anything sharp. I have run more things through my hands and fingers than the law allows. I guess it is just a man thing! Ha! Ha!

Anyway, I just wanted you to know that I have put your knife to good use and will continue to do so. Sorry fixer! You should take a look at the ragweedforge.com online catalog though, they have three different curved knives, and all of them are reasonably priced! Let me know if you decide to order one and what you think about it once you have one!

Also Rockywolf, thanks for letting me add you to my friends list, you are my first. You can add me to yours too if you would like, however you do that! I'm not real up on that kind of stuff. I hope I did everything right anyway. I guess I did, because your avatar showed up on my profile sheet.

Guess that is it for now! Take care,
Tom

How cool. No brother. You just gave all you needed. It is a pleasure to see that you are enjoying it. Have a great time using it!
