Anyone have any experience with the Sky Dragon knife by RocketKnives?
Curious, because I may put a couple custom ones on order.

TANX!

Platinum, welcome to Bladeforums!

I never heard of RocketKnives, so I've never seen the Sky Dragon. Have you got a link to the site or the knife? Offhand, it doesn't sound like something I would spend much money on, but that's hard to say not knowing much about it.

Yeah, that framelock is the class of the collection. But I like the California legal auto, too.

I have owned one of Rob Davidson's Sky Dragons with a scale release, and desert ironwood scales in BG-42 steel for almost 2 years. He has had it twice in that time for vertical play, and the last time replaced the blade without cost. He has a good warranty as far as that goes.
He also had a good write up in Tactical Knives in March of 2001 I believe(would have to chase it down in my mag collection). Anyway the one they did a write up on was the Sky Dragon also, and the writer noticed the same problem of vertical play.
The vertical seems to get to a certain point, and goes no farther but just enough to be bothersome if you are as particular as I(also to the writer of the article in the mag because the one he was testing also had vertical play).
Other than that he does beautiful work, and his knives are heat treated a little on the high side, and takes a bit of sharpening to get a good edge but when you get there it holds it well.
I paid $400 for the one I got, and don't carry it much as I am just too much a fanatic of vertical play, and feel if you spend this much on a custom knife it should not have it. I just decided to live it rather than send back to him again, and just keep it in my collection. Like I said someone else might not be such a fanatic, and would not consider it a problem.
He is a really a nice person to talk to, and deal with, and I just don't want to become a pest, and this is just my own opinion.......

Those knives look good and I'm sure they work even better -- but Jebus H. Cripes, the names... I'm pretty sure I've seen Chinese P.O.Ses named [something] Dragon more times than I can remember...

LarryLuana I would send it back as many times as it takes to not have that problem any more. I know you don't want to be a bother, but like you mentioned, you paid a pretty penny for it and you deserve a working folder. Thats just my .02 I would use it and see if it happens again.

:)

I'm expecting a Bowie from Rocket Knives (Rob Davidson) very shortly & have found Rob to be, as Larry has said, "...a really nice person to talk to, & deal with." Rob offers several knives that I am interested in & as soon as I can settle on one I'll place another order with him.

I understand what you say, and by the way it has vertical play with the new blade also.
Now I must say this it is an auto(scale release), and that may cause the problem, but the action is not harsh enough in my opinon to cause this problem. It is smooth, and slid but not hard like Microtech's, Daltons, etc. Also the one tested in the mag article was a manual action so go figure.
I would probably send it back but like I said will live with it, and have many other customs to carry in it's place, and just keep it for it's beauty, and it is a beauty. Also has one heck of an edge now with my extended honing, and being finicky on sharp blades.
Trying not to heavily criticize as I am somewhat of a perfectionist, and might be acceptable to most others.
Like I said just my .02 cents rounded off to a buck.

I also read on his site he makes all his knives himself being it is a one man shop and he uses ole fashion knife making without alot of high tech equipment. The one I am looking at purchasing is with the button release as shown on his site. Looks like a cool knife, but it is hard to tell until one actually sees it up close and personal. Still thinking on it! :-)

I feel your pain Larry. I am a perfectionist also and blade play would absolutely drive me bonkers........even if you can only feel it, and not see it, it still will keep me from carrying or buying a knife!
