I have a small but good collection of tactical customs and I don't want to keep buying the same thing. I have one custom slip joint, a small single bladed gunstock by Ron Myers. It is a beautiful knife and it didn't cost an arm and a leg. Who makes the best traditional patterns for under $400 and what are their best models?

R.O. Easler makes wonderful slipjoint folders well under your price point, look at www.knifeart.com

ABS Mastersmith PJ Tomes makes a number of lockback and slipjoint patterns that are extremely well made. He won the most innovative folder award at the annual Blade show two years in a row for his modern interpretations of classic knives.

Another vote for P.J. Tomes.

My standard "dress" knife (for those rare occasions when I'm wearing something other than boots and jeans) is a slip-joint Trapper model by PJ. It is a beautiful interpretation of the single-blade classic, and its slender lines disappear in the pocket.

Even with hand-rubbed CPM420V blade and exquisite blue/brown/cream mammoth ivory scales, mine was just $500. His base model with Sandvic steel and stag is under $400.

Dear Mr. Cheeseboro,

My name is Corey Smith; I am a Canadian knifemaker, and have appeared as Smith and Bolton Knives at the last two CKG shows. Mr. Rod Olson, of the Canadian Knifemaker's Guild, won an award for his beautiful lock-back folder, but his table held several traditional slip-joint jacks of superb craftsmanship, in the rough price range you're looking for. Look also at Lothar Berg for traditional folders.

Ray Cover Sr. makes some VERY nice folders at prices that are just a hair over factory stuff.

Danbo we'ed love a pic of your new stag Cover!

good choice in Ray Cover sr.Take a look at

Claude Montjoy a hair over 400 but worth every penny,Gary Crowder is getting raves, and he is downright cheap!

Anthony, I would not mind owning knives from every one of the guys named in this thread so far. Bailey Bradshaw also makes a pattern or two in your price range.

I have not handled any of Dwane Dushane's work yet, but I like what I have heard on him. The same holds true for Lothar Berg. I plan on talking to both in the near future.
