I've seen pictures in the archives of a Victorinox that, I've been told, is called the pioneer; basically as Soldier (same handle too) with a saw.

Anyone know where I can get one of these without paying as much to ship the knife as the thing costs?

Thanks.

JamesA, a good source could be Swiss-knife.com in Switzerland. They ship to US, have good prices, take internet orders.
Go to:
http://www.swiss-knife.com

The Pioneer you are talking about costs US $ 27.71, with economy shipping (can be up to 7 weeks!) it will costs total $ 27. With priority shipping (4-10 days) the cost will be less than $ 30.
There are also two other models there (also called Pioneer), which feature a saw.

... and swiss-knife.com will engrave your knife for no charge. I guess that's only on the cellidor (plastic) models, though. They have great prices and a really cool selection. I ordered a knife from them about a week ago but haven't received it yet. I took the cheapo, up-to-seven-week shipping option so, if my wife gives me the old "WHAT? Another knife!?" routine, at least I can say "But honey, I got FREE shipping!" :p

Are there any duties charged on the knives(shipped to the USA) since they come from overseas???

I have a Victorinox Pioneer and it's like the Soldier model except it has red aluminum alox scales and a key-ring, but it does'nt have a saw.

I seem to recall someone talking about a Soldier-style model with a wood-saw called the Farmer or Cowboy (?).

Happy hunting,
Allen.

Tique, last year there were no duties on the orders from Swiss-knife.com. I do not know the situation right now, but I doubt if there are any.

AllenC, the red alox scaled Pioneers are not produced any more. The current line is silver alox scaled. Out there the Pioneer is not a particular model, but a whole line of checkered silver alox scaled knives, except the Soldier. You can have one or two bladed knives, knives with pruner or electrician (sheepfoot + wire cutter notch) blades, saw, awl, openers + screwdrivers in many combinations.
The Farmer was a red alox scaled knife which featured the blades/implements of the soldier + a saw.
If I remember correctly, the Cowboy has cellidor or nylon scales.

Mnblade, you are right. I have just checked the free engraving option at Swiss-knife.com. It is available only for the cellidor knives.

Phantom is correct. The Cowboy is a larger locking SAK with only a Phillips driver and main blade, IIRC.

I carry a Pioneer EDC it is shown here:

You can but one form the site listed above swiss-knifes.com
There is no duty on incoming knives. There free shipping is slow. There fast shipping is worth it......
Great knife, a very strong slip joint.
