Small review of CPM 440V(Kershaw Ricochet)

A friend of mine recently decided to use his Kershaw Ricochet to scrape off the black coating on his Cold Steel Bad Axe.

After about an hour the blade was finally dull.

There was no nicks or damage of any kind, and he was not scraping on a very friendly angle either.

I broke out my good ole Spyderco sharpmaker and proceded to sharpen. 5 alternating strokes on both sides and it was shaving sharp.

I was amazed at how quick and easy it was to get the edge back. I already knew the steel was easy to touch up because I own a Random task. But I have never dulled mine to the condition of the Ricochet.

What are the drawbacks to this steel? I wish all my knives were made with 440V.

Well, I said it was a small review

Lois,
After a night of wheeling and dealing after a Gator Cutlery Club meeting, I wound up with a brand new Richochet! I must say it has one of the best ground factory blades of ANY knife. The Speed Safe mechanism works excellent and overall the knife is worth every penny, $100???
I couldn't resist taking mine apart to see how it worked

While it was apart, I polished the liners and anodized them. Now I have one hell of a nice factory knife!

I like the Ricochet, also. Glad to hear the blade is that good. I love the Speed Safe opener. My only reservation is that the scales are a little slick. Other than that, a nice knife for the (discounted or auction) price.

I just read a review in Tactical Knives (May 200)on a Spyderco that uses the CPM 440V. They claim it has great edge holding ability, but has a lack of toughness, it can chip when hitting a hard object. (I would think a axe would be a hard object.) I also have a Ricochet with 440V but haven't used it enough to form an solid opinion on the steel. It has only been sharpened once and so far no chips, seems great, time will tell.

I did chip off the tip on my random task a while ago. I was playing with it and did not realize how close I was to my BIG glass kitchen table. The blade flung open and the tip hit the table and a small piece broke off. It was easily fixed with my sharpmaker. I think any blade with a tip that thin would have broken also, I did not contribute it to the CPM 440V.
