Is it possable to stablize snakewood or does it have to
much natrual oil in it. I would like to keep it from cracking.
Thanks

Milk,

Check out lumberlady.com they have some really nice woods including snakewood and will stablize for a small fee.

Get the stuff stabilized. Snakewood is some beautiful wood, but every single knife that I have seen with unstabilized snakewood for handles has cracked or split. Some more than others, but still cracked and split. I know a few makers who will not work with it anymore. Snakewood can be pretty expensive too. I love the stuff, but will not buy a knife with it, unless it has been stabilized.

Yes, you can stabilize snakewood.

It must be completely dry for it to take the stabilizing medium. Drying usually takes 3 or 4 years.

It burns easily and wants to warp when you cut it.

I just buy it already stabilized- then what you see is what you get. Might not be so if you buy it and then have it treated.

Please post a pic when you get the knife with Snakewood finished!

I work in alot of Snakewood...never had it stabilized though...but work it COOL....fresh belts is the way to go. just abit of heat will form hairline cracks..can be filled with superglue but it is best to avoid them of course
