any suggestions for a beginner looking to hit the treeline during winter? Or does anyone have some they'd like to trade out of?

Bill, when you attended our winter trip last year you were wearing Atlass 1033 snowshoes. These are rated as one of the top line shoes available. However, tubbs and redfeather are great shoes too and should be considered when looking to purchase a pair.

Look throught the pages I have linked too above and I am sure you will find a pair that meets your needs.

Best,

Greg

Greg, how would the military snowshoes work out? I'd assume they're not top of the heap but they are usually a lot cheaper. Do they give descent service doing stuff like we did in Jan?

The magnesium shoes that we used when I was in are great if you are touring on level ground. They are terrible if you travel in any area where you want to go up or down. In fact, they can be just like skies when used going downhill

If you really want to get into the sport... get a good pair of backcountry snowshoes that will support your weight plust the weight of your pack... get shoes that allow you to kickstep when going up or down hills.

If you just want to travel on roads that are covered with snow... then the old touring magnesium shoes will work just fine.

Guess it depends on your needs....

Thanks Greg! I'm probably going to pick up the Atlas shoes that are 1 up from the 1033s for the greater wieght limit.
