The home made snowshoe contest got me thinking about how many of you enjoy getting out with your snowshoes. It is a favorite winter pastime of mine.

Right now we have about three foot of packed snow, perfect snowshoe conditions. I have taken my old bear paws out twice in the last week. I played with my RC 3 while out making some fuzz sticks and practicing my fire building skills.

I will try to post some pics i took with my phone later.

I love showshoeing.... I hope it doesn't all melt this weekend when it warms up a bit, i was hoping to enjoy the 2 1/2 feet of packed snow this weekend....

Never been on showshoes before but it would seem it would be a much better workout than walking in regular shoes, no?

I've never used them before either, but it seems like you'd be walking on a big floppy hinge. I imagine you will be feeling muscles you don't use for normal walking. I guess I will find out shortly, contest or not, I want to give that a try!

In the military we always used snowshoes or skis in the wintertime here in norway. Even in combat.
You use a lot less energy with them on your feet. We usually have 6 feet snow more or less, and walking with regular boots just doesnt get the job done, its kinda the same as if you could walk on water, that would be easier than walking in it up to your hips.

i've never used snow shoes, but its a hell of a work out walking in knee high snow for a couple miles..a lot of my ice fishing spots are a mile + and carrying all my ice fishing gear way out there is a work out...im thinking a good pair of snow shoes are in order.

I noticed the snowshoe contest got cancelled....... I was hoping to get out there friday morning and make up some snoeshoes, get some pics and go for a short hike. That way I could go gold and enter the running for some good stuff. If I can still make time to get out there i'll post my results.

Me too. I have never made any, but i was actually thinking about giving it a try. Or at least learning from the contestants.

If you have interest in trying to fashion your home made snow shoes ,do it ! I am working on opening the contest shortly

Cool, thanks. It is something i have considered in the past, an awesome prize package is good motivation. Maybe i should update to gold.

I've been snow skiing my whole life but still have never tried snow shoeing. One of these days I'll have to go get me a pair and give it a try.

Here in MD there is little opportunity to use snowshoe; last year being the exception. Even then it wasn't a hard packed snow that had been around all season.

A story somewhat related to the closed contest:
My dad has told me a story a few times of a guy who broke into one of the restaurants on Skyline Dr in the Shenandoah Nat'l Park, made a set a snowshoes from the backs of two chairs and kept on truckin. Cool story.

These are some of the woods I hunt in:
