Thanks. There are some great ideas in the other thread and I think we can cover these bases with a broader idea that a guy named John (yeah that is his name
) sent me.
Let me bounce this off of you folks and see what you think.
Rather than a maker of the month we could go with a style of the month and see what comes up. John made the point that makers and collectors could post some of their recent or best work/acquisitions in the category.
In addition, maybe some discussions on materials and techniques for each style would come up. Collectors could ask questions and post their preferences and ideas. Information would be generated in one thread for the style. Who knows maybe a parallel thread could start up in Shop Talk.
It has been my experience that I can easily embarrass most makers when I talk about their work in front of them. Most do not feel comfortable even creating the impression that they are waving their own flag. The intention here is to create an atmosphere so that makers and collectors at all levels of all type of styles will be comfortable in contributing. (This might just cover Richard's, Phil's and Steve-O's ideas and offer a broader venue for others).
Granted we do that now and the last thing we want to do is to keep an excited maker or collector from posting because the knife they just made or picked up is not the style of the month. But the benefit is to have threads on each style as a feature where information can be easily found. Between all of us that are interested, I think we can also get some folks that may not hang around here to pop in and add their expertice.
Let me know what you folks think if we come to a consensus I get to work or leave it alone.
Golok, I hope to meet you some day since I have already stolen your signature. One of the things besides knives that makes the hobby of collecting so enjoyable to me is the prevalent attitude of makers. I have seen many times how the community can rally around someone who needs help. I have never seen an industry (lets call it that for the lack of a better term) that shares so much information holding nothing back with what in business terms is "the competition. There is an attitude that permeates the larger community of knife makers that the craft and its preservation is more important than any individual that practices it. The Hall of Fame idea can start with a thread. I am hoping that John's idea will demonstrate the above for people who have not experienced that part of knife making and collecting.
Got to go for a few hours. If there is enough interest, I will follow up tomorrow. In the mean time post your thoughts - Yea or Nay.
Added later: been thinking about this more and more and do not see a down side. I think if we can keep it non-commercial (I think we all know when that line is crossed) and non-worshiping (something I can be guilty of especially when a friend posts something) it might be of benefit and be fun for makers and collectors. I dont care about the past except to learn and hope this may turn the forum into a constant knife show where everyone (and I mean that would be comfortable to pop in and show off some knives talk about how they made or decided on them without catching a bunch of personal grief. Jerry brings out a fantastic point on respect. In general it dominates at knife shows as does honesty.
If we decide to do this I want us all to run it and those that are inclined would be more than welcome to see if we can get our maker and collector friends at all levels to drop in and post on their specialties.
We can do this and make it work, if we want it.
