Thanks. There are some great ideas in the other thread and I think we can cover these bases with a broader idea that a guy named John (yeah that is his name
smile.gif
) sent me.

Let me bounce this off of you folks and see what you think.

Rather than a maker of the month we could go with a style of the month and see what comes up. John made the point that makers and collectors could post some of their recent or best work/acquisitions in the category.

In addition, maybe some discussions on materials and techniques for each style would come up. Collectors could ask questions and post their preferences and ideas. Information would be generated in one thread for the style. Who knows maybe a parallel thread could start up in Shop Talk.

It has been my experience that I can easily embarrass most makers when I talk about their work in front of them. Most do not feel comfortable even creating the impression that they are waving their own flag. The intention here is to create an atmosphere so that makers and collectors at all levels of all type of styles will be comfortable in contributing. (This might just cover Richard's, Phil's and Steve-O's ideas and offer a broader venue for others).

Granted we do that now and the last thing we want to do is to keep an excited maker or collector from posting because the knife they just made or picked up is not the style of the month. But the benefit is to have threads on each style as a feature where information can be easily found. Between all of us that are interested, I think we can also get some folks that may not hang around here to pop in and add their expertice.

Let me know what you folks think if we come to a consensus I get to work or leave it alone.

Golok, I hope to meet you some day since I have already stolen your signature. One of the things besides knives that makes the hobby of collecting so enjoyable to me is the prevalent attitude of makers. I have seen many times how the community can rally around someone who needs help. I have never seen an industry (lets call it that for the lack of a better term) that shares so much information holding nothing back with what in business terms is "the competition. There is an attitude that permeates the larger community of knife makers that the craft and its preservation is more important than any individual that practices it. The Hall of Fame idea can start with a thread. I am hoping that John's idea will demonstrate the above for people who have not experienced that part of knife making and collecting.

Got to go for a few hours. If there is enough interest, I will follow up tomorrow. In the mean time post your thoughts - Yea or Nay.

Added later: been thinking about this more and more and do not see a down side. I think if we can keep it non-commercial (I think we all know when that line is crossed) and non-worshiping (something I can be guilty of especially when a friend posts something) it might be of benefit and be fun for makers and collectors. I dont care about the past except to learn and hope this may turn the forum into a constant knife show where everyone (and I mean that would be comfortable to pop in and show off some knives talk about how they made or decided on them without catching a bunch of personal grief. Jerry brings out a fantastic point on respect. In general it dominates at knife shows as does honesty.

If we decide to do this I want us all to run it and those that are inclined would be more than welcome to see if we can get our maker and collector friends at all levels to drop in and post on their specialties.

We can do this and make it work, if we want it.

I have long wanted a healthy dialog between makers and knife owners. By healthy, I mean no BS by either side and mututal respect by all. Frankly I used to post a lot on BF, but things like "what about hype" and similar threads put me off and made this a less than enjoyable place to hang out. That experiences may differ is a reason for discussion, not one for accusations or acrimony.

Let's do it!

Sounds like a good way to introduce people to more custom makers, and for me to learn more about makers and their knives, since I'm new to customs.
Great idea.

Emphasizing Style will also accent certain makers. I like that idea.

Focusing on a particular style each month, like hunters, Boot knives, Daggers, Bowies, Gents folders, tactical folders, military knives, fantasy knives, unbelievably wierd knives, etc would be a Great way to talk about a whole bunch of different makers.

Let's get right to the heart of the matter and nominate February as the official BladeForums Dagger month.

Great idea! I have found custom knife makers to be one of the most down to earth groups of people. They are each proud of their work but respect the fact that collectors have their own ideas of what is appealing and what is not. I suppose it is much like art in that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. BF provides a place for enthusiasts to meet, discuss, learn, brag, praise, and generally enjoy the world of custom knives. Thanks for your efforts to continue the learning process. I thoroughly enjoy BF and look forward to your new ideas. Keith

Easy now Para, as much as I love daggers (will be picking up 2 Master's this year) John (his real name) and I have been taking the approach of getting those interested in making communist-type group decisions.

We are going to come up with a list much like yours maybe adding blade steels (forged, stainless, etc) then post it for people to add or remove titles (If they have a lucid reason - I'll try to be fair
smile.gif
.

I also anticipate having to talk to some makers that do not normally post here to help out in the discussions. I hope others will do the same with makers and collectors that they know who might have experience in the "style".

I will email this URL to a bunch of folks and get their opinions too. If we can build a rounded basis of support including and outside of the "usual suspects" (I include Para and myself here), I honestly feel that we may have something.

The style of the month with the related month-long dialogue would be great!

Go for it, Gus. I can sure understand makers not wanting to "wave their own flag", but if this is friendly enough from the start it could be just the thing to get them involved again.

I would enjoy reading interviews with different makers, as long as it doesn't turn into a p***ing contest. (That happens a lot here on BF.) We should respect the fact that different people make different knives different ways for different reasons, and everyone is entitled to their own opinions based upon their experience.

I learned from a lot of different makers when I started out. I still do. It would be great to put some of the "human" element here on BF with these interviews. You are right - there is too much "hype" in the world of knives. Just look at the "Which knife is best?" threads and the bickering they sometimes evoke. (Not to mention the "I hate....." threads!)

The one problem I do forsee is trying to pick which "style" to cover next. Just like choosing a particular "maker", that could turn into a real brawl!

You also set yourself up when defining the categories, themselves. (Tactical + Gents = Gactical?) Better line up some Whitehouse pages to do a little running on the floor of Congress for that task!

I agree Tom, I will post the styles and categories that John and I have talked about and let people have at them. We can keep them kind of general at first and go from there if we see a conflict. As far as what goes first, your right that might upset some people, but in that case I will not take the complaints to seriously. (We can vote on that. I want to get as many people involved with the decisions as are interested)

One thing I keep in mind on the forums is that no one has seen it all (although) there are a few that have seen most. Even at that when I see the best of or the worst of comments I try to temper what I read with the fact that even though the person may think such and such is the best. It is really the best as far as their experience has shown and all of us have different experince levels.

When it come to knives, my thoughts are the only thing worth getting in a hurry about is the date of the next show.

(Never understood collectors who push makers to get a knife to them. I think the best approach (after choosing a maker you are comfortable with) is to tell them to take their time and have fun with it.) The last thing I want is a p.o.ed maker working on my knife (maybe that is a little strong lets call it pressured maker)

Gus:

I agree you have the right attitude for getting this thing started in the right direction.

Gus, Sounds like a great plan. Go for it. It should be interesting to get the different views from the point of makers, buyers, collectors, users, sellers, etc.

Gus,

Great idea. One thought, after reading the long list of topics, it might be two years before something I really like pops up. How about having topic of the week instead of topic of the month. That way more topics could be covered faster and the ones that have lots of interest will continue more than a week.

Howdy There......!
Sounds like a great idea to have knifemaker receive comment and opions on various typrs of blades. I would be glad to particapate in the disscussion. Just let me know when it starts.
