So, what's the story about the Buck 532?

Saw this one in a shop today and I am falling in love with it at once. Went home, did a search on the net and in here, and know that it has been discontinued. Can someone tell me more about this nice knife? When it was introduced and were all of them made with BG-42? Gotta control myself from buying more knives.... but maybe one more this year? Ok I promise myself that this is gonna be the "last" one for now... hahaha.

IMHO,

One of their greatest designs. Not all have the BG-42 steel. Many of the limitededitions you see available now are 420HC. Which in itself is not bad, but it's not BG-42 either. The club "anvil" knife, and the year 2K knives are the most recent BG-42 bladed knives. You can find them but it is tough.

The Buck Collectors Club still has a few of the Anvil 532s with BG42 blades. Any one interested can email either me or Larry Oden. We'll both be out of town for the Fall NKCA Ohio Show this weekend though. I hope many of you will be able to join us.

Take care,
John

Thanks for the info, folks. I think the one I spotted has a "hard C" (like a square missing one side) year stamp on the blade. Just not sure about its direction. It's such a nice knife that today is the first time in my life to know about this gem. Where have I been? :D

Whoa... went to the shop again and had actually handled the knife... and on the blade it has the stamp "Master Series BG42". Am I lucky or what. Very likely I will get it.

Searched the net and found not much about the master series of the 532. Does anyone know when it was made? Also, what kind of wood was used for the inlay, then? Read from other threads that the Master Series usually used more exotic woods for the inlays. The one I saw has a brown wood grain inlay instead of the diamond wood with checkering pattern and the master series medallion.

One thing I really like about this knife is the file works on the liner.... So cool. Are all the 532s' liner have those file work on them?

Can't wait until tomorrow when the shop opens.

Hi tok, I think that you are looking at the 2000 532 run. If you do an advanced
search for - overrun ms 532's - you will find some info.

I have a year 2000 532 with BG-42, very nice, holds an edge better than anything else I have. It has proven easy to sharpen as well, despite the hardness (as long as you don't let it get very dull).

Who is ready to see Buck add a 532 to the STANDARD 500 series line? I'm not talking about a "Limited Edition". I'm talking about one of the regulars in the 500 series offering. I can't understand why soooooo many people claim to love this knife but Buck can't seem to justify having it in their standard line. The BG-42's are great and in a perfect world that is what they would offer the in the standard line, but I could live with a 420HC for an everyday carry. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE.

Did I mention PLEASE :D

Thanks for the info regarding the overrun MS 532s. I think mine is very likely one of those. I like the walnut handle much better than the "real MS" diamond wood anyways. Finally went to the shop and got the knife (for $139 CAD). :D It comes with a tan leather sheath that marks 500 on the back of the sheath. Guess it must be the same style for the Duke.

Got home with it this evening, after some clean-up inside the liner with WD-40, a polish on the nickel-silver bolsters and finally a little play-time with the Sharpmaker it's all good to go now.

Just one thing I notice on the BG42 blade, though. The blade is satin-finish but on the belly it has a grey-purple-ish shadow like stain on it. Is that rust? Anyone know how can I remove that? I noticed that before I bought it but I just like it so much that I bought it anyways.

Your thread generated quite a few views, Tok. How about some pixs of everone's 532's. I managed to pick up 5 but they were darn hard to come by!

I didn't notice/hear about the 532 till last week when I spotted it at the shop and I even thought that it's a new model. :p They still have two left there, both BG42 and one with oak colour inlay, the other with green coloured wood inlay.. I got the walnut one cuz I like that colour the best. Though the other two doesn't have the shadow-like stain on the blades.... yet they don't have the "master series" marking on the steel neither. Yes I am a shallow person that digs things like that. :D

Does anyone know or have any experience with those dark shadowly stain on the blade? My knife has the stamp "532MSU" on it. So it was made in 1998. Six years old already. Cool! :D

Tok,

One of the 532's that I carry as a daily user has a stain like that on it. It is BG-42 as well. I don't think it is rust and hasn't "grown" over the past few years that I have carried it. I don't think it is anything to worry about, especially if you are going to use it as a daily carry.

BTW, Anybody know where to pick up any stray 532's? BG-42 bladed or otherwise. With the exception of the limited editions they have pretty much dried up. I can't seem to locate any anymore.

Thanks,

Brian

Hey Brian!

Tried to find Flitz over here and ended up getting a paste form metal polish called Peek at Canadian Tire today. I guess they are pretty similiar. Work on the stain with it at once and managed to get rid of about 80 percent of the stain. The blade looks "sobered up" now. :D So I guess the stain was some sort of patina. So maybe if u want to clean up yours a bit then u can try those metal polishers too.

Funny thing is once after I know I can clean it up that easy I miss those stain now. :D It does gave the knife some characters. Really like this model a lot. Looks elegant enough not to be too tactical and yet the blade shape still has a hint of coolness in it. Gotta be a keeper and I am now thinking if someday I will try to see if I can get some real ivory pieces and have the inlay replaced. One kick-ass EDC! Two thumbs up.

Wondering when the remaining two 532s at the shop will be gone. From the original conditions of all three of them (mine included) at the store (all tarnished on the bolsters and also the original stain on the blade of mine, which was left opened and put into the table top display case), I can see that they have been sitting in the display since a looong time ago and apprantly not so many ppl are awared of their beauty. Glad at least one of them has found a good home (mine) now. :D

Best,

Benny

If those two other 532's weren't so durn far away, I'd go buy them myself! It sounds like the dealer bought a couple from the limited edition run and an MS overrun. The MS series came out in 1998 and then in 2000 the 532 was offered with walnut, blue or red wood inlays and BG-42. Sometimes the blue looked a little green so maybe that is what he has. The best way to know for sure is to look at the label on the box. 532BL is the blue. I am not positive but i am pretty sure they used the same 532MS designation ont he MS overruns.
All of these 4 versions can be found with the 532MSU stamped blade.
Hope this helps,

Hi Joe!

Thanks for the info. One more question on the file work. Is it a standsrd thing for the 532 or it's just for the limited editions?

Thanks,

Ben
