Last Thursday I picked up my Sog fusion throwers from Sandton South Africa. It was a planned holiday to the Eastern Transvaal and a time to play. I cord wrapped them in 2mm para-cord. Firstly I tried a twist wrap but then they wouldn’t fit in the multi-sheath so I went with plain wrap.

The blades were sharp so I was a tad nervous at first but they fitted nicely in my hands for either handle or blade holds.

I did a duck at first light each morning and went hunting trees. After a blade bounced off a tree and skidded off to the side on some tar (a few small knicks in blade) I went deeper into the park.

They are ergonomic and I quickly achieved consistency at 3 & 7m requiring frequent tree change. My 10 year old son was quick to pick up the technique and was with me in the warmer afternoons.

The finish on the blades is still intact although the cord wrapping was repeatedly cut by the other blades and had to be patched up with super glue in my 1st aid kit (otherwise not used). I have since cleaned and re-rapped the blades for my return trip.

It was great to have, at last, a decent set of knives. Some years back my enthusiasm waned due to using general kit and frequent finger slicing. Now to find a decent throwing location in Botswana away from the ubiquitous small stones.

Any one else tried these?

These are some fine looking knives you got there. BTW, the edges are sharp?

I do throw at tress too but i usually find dead trees.(let the living, live. And the dead, deader. Well, actually its helping the dead decompose) but sometimes want to poke other living trees a bit as a change (to refresh my distance preception) but still use the dead tree as my official target board.

What is the specs of it? (length, thickness)

The trees were blue gum that are very environmentally incorrect in natural woodlands of South Africa. However it was more the issue of travelling 1200km in an Opel Corsa Hatch with a target or with wifey and kids. Tough choice.

I am trying to put together a target of pine off cuts but can’t seem to find out how to provide a ground protection. The ground here consists of rough sand and gravel.

The total length is 24.5cm or 9inches. @3&3/4mm thick, weight unknown. They are uncomfortably sharp in 420 although the design keeps the edge from your fingers. You can use them for normal belt knife tasks but since I have so many other knives it was not one of my considerations. The stainless aspect is attractive when there is dew on the grass.

They swing well and are ergonomic, probably a bit short but I am enjoying them considerably. They work and for $50.00 I probably will get a set for my eldest for Christmas.

Nice size. Should give you a nice weight too! But if i get one, i have to proberbly blunt it. (i love 1/2 and 1 1/2 spin throws too) Now u just gave me a difficult decission of which set to go for next.

Skyhawk 440 (the big ones) or the SOG fusion? hmmm.... :D

BTW it came with the edge already razor sharp and ready to cut up things?

I note that on the SOG web page they are advertised as also for general use. They are throwing 'knives' with emphasis on knives.

The sharp edge seems to stay out the way when thrown, but when they are blunt I won't sharpen because throwing always bluntens a blade and it will be an ongoing excercise keeping them sharp. It is nice to know that I can later put an edge on them if for some unimaginable reason I have left all my other knives behind.(Mora, SAK,,,,,,,,,)

I think i wouldn't get a SOG fusion as a throwing knife. Kindda dislike the idea of the 2 metal thingy sticking out in the middle. But otherwise its a good looking piece for spin throws...

I am currently intrested in the United Cutlery's On target Tactical Throwing set

But its kindda confusing cuz there are many names given for this set like UZI Triple or United Cutlery's UZI triple set. It got the size and the UZI version comes in full black

Very sweet those 'On Targets'. My choice is extremely limited in Botswana and restricted to what is obtainable in South Africa. I definitely prefer a black finish and a stainless. When I perfect these I will probably go for something long and may make it myself.

the edge would`ve been razor sharp because some people also use them as cheap hunting knives .

Hunting would work but I tried kitchen work last night and the profile was not that suitable.

An Opel ? I have not seen one of those in decades . Is it like the little sports car with the bump in the hood ? Man those things were neat .

I don,t throw at living trees if it can be at all avoided . Eviromentally correct or no there are better uses for them . There is no organism on this planet that is not of use ........ O:K: Maybe not Howard Stern . L:O:L
