Looking for a larger blade that will be used. Randall does look better to me, but costs twice as much as Trident. Is there something I should know function-wise, looks aside?

OKAY OKAY I DO want to buy randall, really!!! Just give me that extra push I need, tell me why Trident does not stand a chance!!!

The thing is, I want to use the darn thing... And something so beautifull and costly as Randall will certainly be hard for me to use... Do you know what I am talking about?

Buy the Randall. My #14 saw use in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War. I love that knife and I will never, ever part with it. It is well made, stands up to some serious abuse and won't cry when you beat it up. Edge holding is great and sharpening is a breeze. Plus you have the added bonus that it is a forged carbon steel blade rather than a stock removal blade making it stronger and easier to sharpen.

Another vote for the Randall! I have one exactly like the one pictured, and it is one big sharp slab.:)

...the Trident is a great knife...

That being said...

Buy the Randall...it's even better... :D

the knife pictured is mine. It has the border patrol handle and a nickel silver crossguard. My father gave me this knife and when I returned home he had it sent back to Randall to get this done......

The SOG is a good knife, the Randall 14 is a great one with a great and ongoing heritage.
Both are tools and both will do the job , I reckon the buzz you will get every time you draw the Randall will be worth the extra Dollar's.
Buy once , buy right , buy the Randall if you can afford it !
Paul.

I have both knives.

Buy the Randall.

The SOG looks great but, when you compare the two side by side,
the SOG looks like a toy compared to the Randall.

Spend more and buy the right knife, use it and be happy for a long time.
I would recommend the Carbon blade for a user knife.

Thanks, Dan

save up the extra cash and get the Randall.

You can get the Trident, and you will have a good knife that will serve you well, but I can bet you my milk money that you'll forever be thinking about that Randall!!!

Pardon my newbieness, but what is a "stock removal blade"?

I was under the impression that the SOG was pretty near the top of the heap, material-wise. But I'm not a metallurgist.

Does anyone actually stock Randall knives? Last time I checked the backlog on new knives was three years. I suppose you could find what you're looking for on Ebay...that is if you don't mind paying a high price.

Stock Removal: Taking a bar of steel, and cutting/grinding it to shape, then grinding the edge bevels on it. Thus removing material with the abrasive on the grinder wheel or belt. you are removing "stock"... hence, Stock Removal. SOG does Stock Removal.

Forged is taking a bar of steel, heating it up red hot, and pounding it into shape as much as you can, and then probably using some sort of a grinder to even up the bevels and the edge, and to smooth the flats of the blade. You lose far less steel this way, and it does make a better blade. Not sure how it does make a better blade, but it does.

Forging alignes the carbides, forge weldes possible cracs in steel structure, refines particle size, denses structure along edge... IF forged, quenched and tempered correctly - IF forged wrongly... correspondenly poor results in some properties.

normal stock steel is now good but good bladesmith can control steels properties and get results that are not achievable otherwise.

I would also recommend the Randall. I have purchased two #14's, one was the standard one I gave my son. the other had a Model #1 style hilt, a stainless blade, and a single finger grip handle and black sheath. That one was for me!

Go with the Randall!!!! I got my Randall #14 way back around 89 and it's been around the world abused and misused. I've carried it all over the pacfic and to Saudi a couple times. Have only lately after a long search found a replacement blade (Strider) as I wanted to retire the Randall.

Now the Randall rests in a place of honor ready to be called to duty if ever needed.
