Here's a 7 1/2" Short Bowie forged in 1084 with some of that miraculous End-grain Spalted Maple. This stuff is just so fantastic.
Being end-grain, the stabilizing activity only needs to go about 1/2 inch or so, since it's going laterally through the material! Literally turns this handle into one SOLID piece of material. It's even difficult to file.
Mild steel take-down fittings are faceted with polished and flattened surfaces, and then hot blued.
I opted to not etch the blade, but rather, gave it an 800 hand rubbed finish.
Headed for Ohio!

Karl That wood is as nice as I have ever seen. someone is going to be very happy,

I think nature's way of working is really wonderous. To think that even such a process of decay can create this kind of beauty, just wonderful. Spalted woods are up there in my top five loved handled materials. That is a very, very beautiful handle, and a super knife!

Karl, thats a sweeeeet looking knife. The colors from the handle, fittings and hand rubbed blade all contrast very nicely and really set the whole package off. I picked up some spalted maple in Troy. Hope mine looks that good!! Bill

I wish you would post larger pictures, Karl.

Thats a BEAUTY Karl, But why are you being so sel-fish with that maple, don't you know the new policy, "spread the wood". ;)
