Special-order color slabs for new Delica?

Since the new Delica is "assembled" rather than mashed together, it would be cool if Spyderco sold replacement FRN slabs in different colors. Then we could change the color ourselves and Sal wouldn't have to listen to me b!tch all day long about how I hate black mall-ninja knives.

If the slabs are already being produced, how difficult would it be to have a batch made in a different color to be sold by themselves? How much would they have to sell for? Is this much more likely to happen than having to make, store, and sell whole knives in less-popular colors?

Benchmade is selling lots of whole color knives (Mini Griptilian) just like Spyderco used to. With the new Delica, the size and construction (FRN over steel) are similar, except for the lock, but the steel is better and the price will be a little lower. Any good reason why not?

Edit: OK, I don't know if the old colored Delicas sold well or not.

Would be nice, warrenty issues could be a problem though. But I would like it.

As long as it is assembled correctly, I don't see why it should be a problem.

I mean that disassembly usually is a warrenty issue. But I really like the idea.
Hope Sal reads it.

Right. I wasn't sure if disassembly was an instant voided wareranty, like Benchmade. They (benchmade) were pretty strict in words, but it was kind of silly because as long as you don't screw it up they would never know. It's just some flat pieces of stuff and some screws. Of course, if the knife returns and it's orange instead of black, they can tell.

I don't think it's a horrible idea but I still see alot of issues with warranty. I forsee alot of, "well I slipped with my screwdriver and....you fill in the rest)" or "I just dropped a couple of screws!".

I like the idea personally and I am surprised that some entrepreneur has not started some sort of "After Market" Products for knives that have handles that are easily disassembled.

I would love to have some options for some higher end handles for My BM Grip and Mini Grip.

Maybe it has to do with trademark and/or patent infringement.

I like black. But it would be cool to have some other colors available. A friend has been bugging me for a purple SAK, I'm sure she'd love a purple Delica.

Every girl I show my bright green Griptilian to loves it. One I spoke to mentioned she was eyeing the purple one.

Probably. It's a very distinct part of the product, so trademark or copyright could easily apply, most certainly so if you want the logo to appear. Maybe if it were a different handle shape and texture and only the screw holes lined up, but I really want an exact and OEM-quality replacement.

I want extra colors for the new calypso, it's pivot is screwed together.
Are you talking about the burgundy FRN Calypso Jr.? If so where did you get the idea that the pivot is a screw? Neither of mine are.

Um, this is my first time back to bladeforums in at least some weeks, and I haven't been keeping up...

Did someone say that Spyderco is making a SCREW-TOGETHER DELICA?! As in, it's not RIVETED anymore?!

I've been waiting YEARS for something like that to happen! It's still a lockback, right?

SWEET! Now I have to get a few of them!

Thanks, Sal!

Now please, don't ever make another riveted-together knife! ;)

Sounds like a good idea to me. The new sets should come with extra screws. I'll take a blue one and a dark gray one.

What about interchangeble blades too? That would freaking ROCK.

You could basically build your own knife.

I think the reason why there isn't any company making after-market colour handles for knives is that unlike cell-phone, or any accessory natured product for that matter, the market size for EDC knives are still relatively small for making some quality after-market parts to sustain a reasonable profit. Just look around the number of non-knife ppl we encounter everyday. Sigh... :thumbdn:

Very good point. I guess that I'm new enough as a knife knut to naively think that everyone else in the world has the same passion (obsession?).
