Dear Sirs,

I got the question in the German Knife Forum about a unsymmetric sheath
for the 110, I never saw a 110 with such a shape and that looks like the sheath
for the 531.

- When did Buck use these aheath for the 110?
- Did they use these sheath when the standard ones were sold out?

Many thanks for any answers.

Best,
Haebbie

Thanks a lot, Plumber, but the linked thread doesn't hit the point.
The black sheath is stamped with 110. I never saw a 110 with such a sheath.
Did Buck use the 531-Sheath for the 110, when the standard sheath was sold out?

One member of the German Knife Forum got a 110 in the early nineties with the
sheath on top and another one saw theses sheaths more than ten years later
in an oudoor shop that sells Buck knives.

How many 110 were delivered with this sheath? When did Buck use these sheath
for the 110? Or is it a type of bulid out for the German market?

Best,
Haebbie

Sheaths are tough to find information on.

That sheath, I think, was the new buck sheath about 20 years ago.

For some reason they went back to the old style in (a few???) years.

Sheaths (like old blades) can be lost in storage and then found and used years later.......so it's difficult to pin down dates.

I just looked and I got a brown one with a custom 110 from the Custom Shoppe in 2009.......so they do turn up unexpectedly and at random, it seems.

I am not sure about regular production, but the "foldover" style sheath was furnished with custom shop 110's some time back.

Here are pictures of one I picked up off the bay a while back. Not sure of the date but it is brand new.

They ARE excellent sheaths and I don't know why Buck went back to the old design.

Maybe it was just a whim that was politically unpopular or offended those who were staunch traditionalists?

I wonder? Maybe we can get a comment from Buck?

The one I got with the Buck Custom 110 was marked "110," I guess I didn't mention that before.

Haebbie, I don't believe that they used the 531 sheaths for 110's. I just checked several of mine and the sheaths marked 531/535/550 measure 1/8" narrower and 1/8" shorter overall than the ones marked 110. I tried a 110 in the others and although I can force it down into the sheath, it will not snap closed because the flap won't reach to match up the snap halves.

I have several 110's new in the box that came with that style sheath so when I dig them out and check the date stamps on them, I'll let you know what years they are from.

Here's a quick (lousy) picture to illustrate the difference. The sheath on the left is stamped 110, the right one is stamped (under the belt loop) 531/535/550. Not a huge difference in size but enough to keep a 110 out of the one on the right without reforming the leather to stretch to fit it.

This is the sheath I got with my 110 in 1998, except in brown. In 2003 and 2011 I bought 110 with the sheath sewn up both sides and in black, both from big box stores, unlikely to be very old stock. Im sure the Buck gurus will have a bird with this but I recall seeing Buck standard issue 110 sheaths coming out of a shop north-east of Toronto 10 years ago. This shop did some leatherwork contracts with my father and specialized in (i guess you would call it) mid-scale mass production, they did a lot of nylon and leather holsters, slings, belts and cases for company's like Browning, Bushnell, Rapala and I guess Buck, and I recall seeing boxes of Buck 110 sheaths. So if Buck outsourced there sheath production then the design can vary greatly from one contract to the next.

Haebbie I have a NIB 110 that has that style of sheath, that was purchased from Larry Oden, I will need to dig it out to check the date on it. I also have some brown ones in that style, will try to get some pictures if I can. HL

I have one of those sheaths,it was bought at a hunting store in 1995,the knife it came with was stamped Buck 110c hope that helps.

Thanks a lot for the wholesale information!!
I try to sum them up:

- The shown sheath with the 110 looks like the sheath for the 531, but is a few larger. Ergo the two sheath are not the same.
- The "foldover" sheath for the 110 was seen around 1990 the first time
- The sheath comes primarily with knives from the custom shop.
- Buck sold a batch of 110s to a large German outdoor shop together with the foldover sheath, just like a build out.

Ergo: The sheath is a roundabout 20 year old foldover pouch from the custom shop. It is not possible to nail it down exactly,
because the supplied knife got lost a long time ago and the owner can't imagine how the knife looked like and whether it was
a custom made knife.

That Buck sold out the old custom shop sheath is only a nice circumstance for the coustomers of the German outodoor shop.
But there must be other too who bought and sold the styllish foldover Buck sheaths. That declares, that there are standard
110 offered together with the foldover sheath at ebay or other stores.

Did I forget anything?

Best,
Herbert

Haebbie, I have one that is a standard 110, date stamped 1998 that came with the sheath. The label on the box says:

HUNTER W/FOLDOVER
B1110-00-0

The price list from 1998 shows both, 110 Hunter for $57 and 110 Hunter W/Foldover for $54 so it appears that it was a standard catalog item and may have been a cost cutting thing as was stated in the link that I posted.

I've gone through some of mine and have (so far) come up with 6 of the 110 foldover sheaths for the 110 and in that bunch, there are 4 different style "Buck" logos stamped on the flaps. Two of those stamps are the "triangle" logo that was used in the catalogs from '98 through '01. A couple of the others have the same older style "Buck" that I see on much older sheaths and the rest show newer style stamps. I think with some digging and comparing the stamps/fonts of the flap stamps may also help with a time line for these.

More info from the catalogs and price lists:

The foldover sheath was listed as an option for the standard 110 from '94 through '98. In '99 it was no longer offered that way, but the sheath itself was listed as a stand alone item through 2002. Since it was offered for at least 9 years, they should be fairly common so conclusion #3 in post #15 I don't believe is correct.

Fun thread,,,

Reminded me that I have this one in a clam pack, cheap from ebay, that I have never opened.
Never have been able to date it very close. No particular reason for not opening it, other than it has just been fun keeping it intact.

What's y'alls best guess on its date from all the clues on the clammie?

goodness,,,those are really old pics. Need to hook up the new macro.

Well, they used the triangle logo from '98 through 2001 if that helps. Is there a catalog number anywhere on the packaging?
