Speedtech Synergy vs. Benchmade 730

Is the Synergy worth the extra money? I was reserching the BM 730 as an alternative to the bm 710. I like the 710, but the additional blade length and handle size may become a problem. Is the Synergy lock system as solid compared to the Axis lock system? Is the Synergy a quality product compared to the Benchmades?

This depends on what you are waiting from your knife.
BM makes very solid high performance working knives in reasonable price. If it is enough for you - you can't to go wrong with them.
On the other hand, if you want to have "cool knife", "another knife", knife for admiring - you might want to pay more than twice for them. I never handled any Synergy knife but I read some delighted posts here and I believe it's quality is high, design is innovative and look is cool. But does it cut better?
Your decision - is it worth extra bucks for you...

Well, at this level "worth extra money" is virtual. Both BM and Synergy perform. You pay extra for the originality, finish, feel and having something different. All I can say it was worth $270 I paid for my Synergy.

I don't think Synergy's lock is stronger than Axis. But don't take my word for it.

The action is very slick. It is not my "heavy work" knife though. Not because I think it wouldn't perform but because of the looks.

I dedicated it to be my semi dress-up knife.

You will get your money's worth if you buy a SpeedTech. If you're of the mind to appreciate a premium product, and want to spend the money, you'll be very happy.

I've had my Synergy for about 4 mos. now and it is the smoothest knife I've handled to date. The lock is regarded to be a strong lock. You can call Jim o'Young at Speed-Tech and he will give you the low down. I'd recommend the extra money it will cost you to purchase a Synergy.

Well worth the extra money. You can also choose from blade style, color and some custom items. Can't get that with the BM!!

Oh, and the extra money also gives you a handle that is wonderfully slick. I have complained about this ever since I held one of the preproduction madels way back when, but nobody else seems to mind. I wonder if anybody with a Synergy would be willing, even with just water, to do some thrusting with a wet Synergy? It is a slick knife, though (both ways

You got there a point Bart

. But note that this also would apply to any knife with a polished (and without guards) handle. Synergy isn't that bad compared to those.

The entire handle of the Synergy is textured, and the contouring lends to a much more solid grip on the entire handle, rather than relying on contact points. Additionally, the Synergy has texturing in the finger well, on the thumb ramp, and on both the top and bottom of the butt, rendering improved grip retention and hand indexing.

I'd be very comfortably thrusting with a wet Synergy.

Oops, you're right Brian. This is what I meant. My post wasn't precise, almost suggesting that Synergy's handle is smooth.
Sorry.
