Spyder edge

I am planning on buying the new Endura 4 and I would like it to have the full serrated Spyder Edge. One of the main uses this knife will have is at work, I think it would be good for cutting rope and possibly life-line straps if needed. It will be a backup to my plain edge Native that will take most of the cutting work.

So main concern is what happens to the Spyder edge after some good cutting? How fast does it dull and how easily can it be resharpened? Will Spyderco resharpen it (I ask this because Benchmade says they won't resharpen the serrated portion of their blades)? Any other concerns with a fully serrated blade?

Fully serrated is a no brainer for work to me. They hold their edge much longer than a plain edge and will continue to cut, if a bit sloppily, for quite some time even after they are dull. With use and sharpening the toothiness will wear down and the cutting ability just gets smoother and better.

If you have a Sharpmaker, then they are just as easy to sharpen as a plain edge. You just use the corner of the stone instead of the flat, and only use fine grit so as not to deteriorate the serrates. You draw them down the stones a bit slower to allow each serrate to hit the stone as well, and you can either maintain the original grind and sharpen on one side only, or sharpen both sides equally. This is a matter of preference. I like to sharpen both side, as I have found through experience that it cuts better for me that way.

If you don't have a Sharpmaker, then you will probably need to get one if you want to keep it sharp yourself.

I don't have much skill sharpening, will Spyderco sharpen a serrated edge for me?

You also can return your knife to Spyderco's corporate headquarters for complimentary sharpening for as long as you own it. The costs and responsibility involved in shipping the knife to and from Spyderco are the responsibility of you, the original owner. If we determine that your edge is irreparable our Warranty and Repair Department will contact you.
It doesn't say that they won't, so I assume they will?

As I mentioned earlier, this will be a backup knife so I doubt I will need it sharpened very often, probably every other year or so.

I can't say for sure, but I don't see why they wouldn't.

The Sharpmaker will run you about fifty buck, and comes with a DVD showing you how to use it. It's super easy. A child could learn do it in less than an hour, no joke. I would recommend 100 times over you learning to sharpen them yourself.

If you're going to be cutting rope or line, you won't need to sharpen the edge for quite a while. If you were cutting wire or drywall, you'd have to think about it more. It doesn't dull very quickly, and it's really easy to sharpen on the Sharpmaker(get one)

Also, if you're willing to send it in, Spyderco will sharpen your SE blades, but it's easier to do it yourself(see above about getting a Sharpmaker).

The only concern you may have with an SE blade is the serrations breaking. But that's pretty hard to do under normal use. Short of using your knife as a can opener, you'll be fine;)
