are the spyderco bench stones any good? i liked that you don't need any oil? is it the same material as the shrpmaker rods?

thanks in advance for the help

Yes, the Spyderco (302) bench stones are excellent! I use the fine and ultra fine ones and they keep my knives VERY sharp. They are long-enough where you can get a full stroke with most any blade.

I have and use the medium and fine grit stones from Spyderco. I love them! They do a great job at sharpening, easy to clean and large enough to allow me to get the whole blade on a single pass.

love em love em love em!!!! probably tha finest stones i have used to date!!! they stay in great shape as long as ya keep em clean-fed

Got the 204 (sharpmaker) and the 302. They are the same material and perform great. A pencil eraser will clean them in a couple seconds, BTW.

Spyderco started off making sharpening products. ;)

I would go for medium and fine, then you can strop.

if i was going to get 2, which should it be? medium, fine, or ultrafine?
I just went through the same delima. I wound up with the medium and fine.
You absolutely need the medium to shape the edge, so if you're only going to get two, get the medium and fine. The fine will do the job just fine. But, as has been said, you will need to strop or get the ultra-fine for the finest fine finish. Then you'll be fine and dandy.

They are like the sharpmaker and thus have the same limitation. Spyderco doesn't or can't make them coarse enough for any serious metal removal. The pocket ones are great for camping, just don't let your blade get too dull.
