I'm looking for a good fixed blade hunting knife. Any experiences with the Bill Moran Drop Point?

Thanks,
Scott

Have the now-discontinued upswept Featherweight version. See my avatar. Fantastic knife.

Have thought about picking up the Drop Point lest it also be discontinued in the future.

Given the handle size, it may not be the best knife if you have really large hands. However, my hands are pretty large, and I still like my Featherweight. It goes hunting with me in my turkey vest. Lightweight and sharp as a razor. Great for the amount of knife work needed to breast out a wild turkey.

For deer chores, I carry a Buck Vanguard with rubber handles and ATS-34 steel. I like having the blade guard on the Buck for deer gutting where hands/gloves can get slicker.

Hope someone can say more about the Drop Point version.

I have the drop point version. I don't hunt, but instead use it as a general EDC knife. It's an excellent blade; crazy sharp and great cutter. The sheath is excellent. I don't see how you could go wrong getting one.

I've got both versions of the Moran. Super fixed blade. It's likely seen the most time on my belt of all my fixed blades. And as one of the guys said above, it is unbelievably sharp out of the box.

i love my Moran DP, not only did i get it for a great price, but i could not believe how sharp it came. It has been my deer knife of choice for a year so far with no signs of retirement. I have yet to touch a fixed blade that fit my hand better, or IMO that was better designed.

Never hunted with the Moran, but I find drop point blades make great hunting knives and feel the Moran is a perfect size for deer hunting here in the Northeast. Big enough to do the job, small enough to be comfortable to carry and not get one labeled as a "city boy". Handle, while utilitarian looking, feels great. And, as others have pointed out, scalpel sharp out of the box.

EXACTLY what ElectricZombie said  The trick has become to get it out of my wife's almost daily use of it in the kitchen...:D

I handled one in a shop the other day. It felt nicely balanced, but the handle felt slightly small, and also a bit insecure. Maybe I just don't trust Kraton inserts, vs. a highly textured surface.

Does anyone have opinions on how the VG-10 blade steel holds up?

The VG-10 should hold up very long. It is used in alot of Spyderco's knifes. It is the steel used in the knives made in Japan I believe.

The kraton inserts provide an excellent grip. I've never had a problem with them.

VG-10 is a great steel. It will hold an edge for decent amount of time and is easy to sharpen. VG-10 also takes an extremely fine edge; you can easily get it crazy sharp. VG-10 is one of my favorite steels.

I can't say enough good about the Spyderco "Bill Moran". It's a great knife. I just recently got the FB-02 version. I had looked for that one for quite a while before I found one. I am assuming that the FB-01 is far and above the most preferred of the 2.

It's a great knife but I wish that Spyderco would make a fixed blade hunting knife with a guthook.
