I was just over at the REKAT Forum and the regulars there were concerned about the lack of activity and the future of a Company that has some excellent designs but QC Difficulties.

Anyway there were a couple of posts that if REKAT is in trouble that they would like to see Spyderco buy them out because:

Sal Glesser's participation in this Forum sets the standard by which other Manufacturer's Forums are judged. (Usually unfavorably because Sal's participation is awesome.)

Spyderco's QC is the best.

The SIFU and Rolling Lock would be awesome additions to the Spyderco lineup.

While I hope that REKAT is prospering I think it says a lot about Sal and Spyderco when fans of another company hope for a Spyderco takeover.

Hey, that's a GREAT IDEA!!:D

Wish I'D thought of it!:)

Enthusiastically,

Karl

P.S. SpyderSAK Deluxe with a ROLLING LOCK! (hint)

this is how rumors are born, in two days people will be saying "did you hear united cutlery bought spyderco?!" :)

seriously, I think it's kind of early to be planing the funeral/buyout/shutdown of REKAT. we know they're busy making new knives (Bob B. told me by email that the pygmi warrior is still on schedule for the end of the year) and providing good, swift repairs, and that they're making more SIFUs than anything else and trying fantically to keep up with orders. Lets not get carried away. Of course, I'd love to see that merger too :)

(1) This is some kind of super-rumor. Forget it.

(2) Spyderco has nothing to gain from buying REKAT besides headaches. Aside from cleaning up REKAT's *serious* quality issues, Spyderco would get (a) the Rolling Lock, which Spyderco does not need now that they have their own SuperLocks, and (b) all the reputation that comes from selling knives that are *meant* to be used on people.

My favorite knife company already has too many product numbers, and has to bump current models to make room for more in-house designs.

Spyderco buying REKAT ISN'T a "rumor"...It's just a DREAM, a WISH, but NOT a rumor.:).

May I suggest that we cool our jets for a bit, both here and in the REKAT Forum. I suspect that we are all jumping to unfounded conclusions as I note that Sparks is still pushing their products in 1SKS and I would doubt that he would be doing so if he didn't think tha there was a good chance of REKAT remaining around for the forseeable future, at least I hope not.

This reminds me of the old parlor game where a person tells the person next to him/her something, then it gets passed one by one to the next person, and everyone has a big laugh because the last version usually bears little, if any, resemblance to the first one.

I'm the one who compared Sal's participation in this and his own forum to that of the 3 REKAT principles in their forum. Somebody else had already said something to the effect of wondering if there were any efforts to sell the company to another manufacturer. Then the "wish" that Spyderco would buy was voiced, and away it went.

My post though, came before the one stating the companies website had vanished from the web. Given the inability to "fix" it in 8 or more months, that does seem potentially significant to me.

I have to agree with Shmackey re the desirability of Spdyerco buying out REKAT. I think he hit several nails head on in his post. For a brief while, I was prepared to be a REKAT fan, and intended to definitely buy a Carnivore. Then the poor fit of the Timberline Wortac in my hand, designed by the same maker who designed the Carnivore, and looking very similar, persuaded me otherwise. Then I really started to pay attention to the QC gripes, and the decreasing lack of availability of anyone in the company other than Bob Brothers.

I personally believe that the principles level of participation in their own forum is representative of the company's true attitude towards its customers.

What Spyderco should do is buy the patent on the rolling lock, and in the process give REKAT a free license. (Thus allowing REKAT to keep producing the awesome SIFU).

Then, Spyderco should license the rolling lock to Emerson, CRKT, Gerber, Microtech, Buck, Al Mar, Kershaw, etc.. (All the non-super lock companies that would be willing to pay something for a super lock). Spyderco would have nothing to lose by spreading the technology (REKAT is probably hesitant) and could lower the cost of the license significantly by selling to multiple companies.

The rolling lock is pretty nifty. I'd like to see it in widespread use. If REKAT isn't in the financial position to use it, it should sell the technology. I don't like the rolling lock as much as the axis lock, but it is very simple and functional, and I imagine it's far cheaper to produce than the axis lock knives.

Yes, Spyderco already has a super lock. But, I doubt very much that the compression lock is going to be licensed out to other companies in the near future. By making a deal with REKAT, Spyderco could send some cash into REKAT, and in the process possibly make a handsome profit by spreading the technology to other companies. Perhaps it could even get its hands on some other tech in the process (e.g. LAWKS from CRKT, or even possibly the Wave from Emerson).

A simple system like LAWKS can sure improve liner locks. It helps a huge amount on my CRKT folders. I'd love to see a military with it.

Even better would be a waved military with the compression or rolling lock. Man, that would be sweet.

Pure fantasy, of course, but if REKAT's in trouble at all, I'd love to see Spyderco help them out, and in the process make some serious technological/financial gains. Just my .02

My only interest in REKAT died with the plans for the Wakatan. While I'd like to see it resurrected by a company with far better QC than what I've seen reported here, I doubt Sal would be interested, especially since the mood of the moment seems to be aiming for "gentlemen's folders" rather than megafolders.

wow, i'm the guy who posted the original thread in the REKAT forum wondering were everyone was and 3 days later i look and REKATS being sold to spyderco and stuff is listed ion the spydie forum - man i started something didnt I lol - was totally inoccent i swear lol - but anyway just shows ya how things get started on the net - anyway i hope all is well at REKAT, and spyderco too - i had to laugh when i read all this stuff tonight, i didnt know it had gone so far.....oh and hey, a rep for hurting people (REKAT)? spydie makes afew of those too ala gunting, matriarch, civilian, etc - but heck yes they do and thats why i like them!!!

The Buck, Strider and even the AKTI forums are pretty slow. I think they're in good shape. Spyderco fans are just boisterous!!!

Sal,
Does that mean the rumor about Spyderco taking over Coors Brewery aren't true either! LOL

Hmmm...A Coors beer can with the Spyderco hole as a way to pop it open.:D.
