A buddy emailed me about his 2-sided Spyderco medium ceramic bench stone (302M).
I checked the spyderco site where he says he purchased them and don't recognize anything resembling what he is talking about. Am I missing something here?

Maybe it's the Double-Stuff 303MF? It's a 1"x5" stone with one side brown and the other white. It might be discontinued as I can't find it at NGK, but see it here. No, let me apologize. It's at Spyderco's website as well. It used to be at New Graham and I'm sure they can get the stone for you if you want it, though I find DMT's Duo-Fold to be a better "on the go" sharpener if you carry mostly high-carbon stainless (S30V and the like) even though I like the 302MF more for other steels.

You're my go-to guy:). That's interesting, hmmm...I've got the Spyderco F and UF and am not crazy about either of them so as you suggest I'm probably get something else. I'll have to ask him. (He's one of the most unusual and brilliant people you will meet--he could probably recite the phone book if he had 5" to read it--not an exageration.) So I figured I better check my facts before I quibble with him--he's a great quibbler as well.

Just curious--do you think it possible to sharpen a 3" straight razor (pretty soft metal and super- thin edge) with something like a dia-fold? I feel I can't get enough control angle control and am afraid I'll screw up the bevels.

I wouldn't. Anything coarser than a 2000 grit Glasstone or 4000 grit Norton would make me nervous of damaging the edge.

Kudos on having a Johnny Mnemonic as your Guy Friday!

I'll let you know what I find out. He's bulletproof and I say that with deep affection.:D I suspect that he won't pull any rabbits out of a hat maybe just a white elephant.:)

as you can see from the product listings on the spyderco site, the sharpeners seem to be numbered in a manner where the three digits denote the size/shape, the letter(s) after denote the 'grit'. The 302 is a 2x8 bench stone, but they don't have a double-sided one (would be MF) The only thing double-sided is the 303, as Thom mentioned.

NO!!!! I shave with straight edge razors, and if I need to repair serious damage to the edge, 3 to 5 strokes on a Norton 1000 will take it out, then it's back to the 4000/8000 for clean up. Anything more, and you'll be taking off waaaaaay too much metal, and spend too much time cleaning up.

That would have been my response as well. I would not touch a straight razor with anything but a waterstone or a razor hone, usually something like this:

Annr, Spyderco makes three versions of the 302....Ultra-Fine, Fine and Medium(SC302UF, SC302F, and SC302M respectively). We have all three in stock.
If you go to our home page and type SC302 in the search box, it will display all three versions.
Hope this helps.

Thx-
I asked because a student came in with the aforementioned dia-fold and wanted to know how to use it on his razor-style knife. I shrugged and suggested he find something else to sharpen if he had his heart set on the dia-fold. Just have to be the bad guy sometimes.:(

HoB, Little stone looks attractive.;) but I'm not sure how one would use it, meaning how does one hold the knife w.r.t. the stone (stone in hand or on fixed surface), specifically avoiding 1.5" patches on the blade or rolling the edge. Or does one hone lengthwise?

Michael--good to know about your products; my friend may be happy to know that he has options:).

Well, not sure, not a fan of small stones myself. I have tried both and despite the small size ended up moving the blade instead of the stone. But these belgium stones come in three sizes (just browse the site that I linked too), largest is 1.5"x 8" since they are natural stones, they do get a bit expensive though.

Agreed. I wind up looking like I'm trying to start a fire. Can't tell which is moving more, the blade or stone. Seems to be the blade. Re: stone size. I'm thinking that more in terms of the limitations of the width. 1.5" on a 3" blade seems iffy on a straight edge razor. Would love to see a skilled demonstration.
