SPYDERCO Hawkbill uses

As a few of you know I am a SPYDERCO Hawkbill enthusiast/fanatic. I have found these blades to have utility uses that are unique in a lot of ways over some of your conventional designs. It was purely by chance and accident that I discovered that these Spyderco Hawkbill blades are a whole lot more than just a "LOOK COOL KNIFE". They do indeed look cool in my opinion but these knives are serious tools that few others are even aware of.

And I know I am not alone as a Spyderco HAWKBILL user so I would like to know what you all use your SPYDERCO HAWKBILLS for. I know they are used a lot in the fishing industry but I also know that they have a myriad of other uses as well. I want to learn more so tell me :)

Those little plastic "zip" ties are best confronted with a pair of wire cutting pliers, however a hawkbilled Spydie makes short work out of them and is much easier to carry. In my line of work I cut a lot of these things. They are tough little critters. Slide the Merlin's tip under them and they just "pop" open likety-split. :)

Hopefully we'll see the Merlin return with the Delica IV's new handle format. Oh, and the Spyderhawk with the E4's new handle format. :D

I'm all over that.;)

I use my Hawkbills for opening/breaking down boxes. And Harry is correct, it excels at cutting zip ties.

It's such a versatile blade shape:cool:

Love hawkbills. The main reason is because they look cool. With a couple of pointers, it makes a great SD knife as well. Also, if you use your knife for just opening mail and packages, it is fine for EDC. Now, if someone could give some info on the larger hawkbill coming out by Spyderco. I'm listening.

Did a little research. There is going to the Superhawk. A mega hawkbill with a compression lock. How do you like those apples?!

Ah...the Super Hawk:cool:

A Spyderhawk sized blade(steel as yet unknown), nested compression lock with textured Carbon Fiber scales. Ambi clip(thank you).

That's all we know at this point. I believe there is a proto, but no one admits to having seen it.;)

I do like those apples>> I want a bushel of them :D

I just found another use for a Hawkbill. They are quite proficient in cleaning fish. I also think I am going to keep a Merlin on my sunvisor. I bet it will do seatbelts better than my ASSIST I model will.

One day I was at a flowershop where you have to wrap your own flowers.

There was a woman who wanted to get a piece of foil of a roll and she asked if I could help her(I think she thought I worked there). I whipped out my G10 Harpy/SE and cut a nice clean piece of foil for her. I was suprised she wasn't scared of the knife, but instead was very thankful.

I haven't carried a hawkbill for quite a while(to excited with all the other Spyders:o ), but since I received my Tasman/SE I'm going to EDC it and find out how versetile it actually is.

BTW, by looking at my new Tasman, I remembered again how much I like the looks of a serrated hawkbill.

Can't wait for the Super Tanker Hawkbill;)

I just amazed myself with the little Dodo again...

we have one of those blue/white striped 1" ropes tied across the end of our loading dock, to prevent people from walking off the edge of the dock (i lobbied to let darwinism take it's course, but i was outvoted, so up the rope went)

i purchased a little too much rope, on purpose, because i wanted to see how well the Harpy cut rope....

fast forward to today, i finally got around to tightening up the rope, and i had a little slack left over, so naturally, i grabbed my EDC Hawkbill-of-the-day, my SE #130 Dodo, held the rope taut, and *snick*, it cut through 1" thick poly rope with a tough center core like it wasn't even there, it just zipped right through in one stroke, nice, clean cut

"D'Argo", the co-worker i recently got addicted to Spydies saw me cut the rope and he was absolutely *stunned* that such a "small" blade could cut so well.....

so, like any good Hawkbill fanatic, i handed him the remaining piece of rope and had him cut it with his Scorpius, a nice clean cut, but he did have to cut twice to get the last few threads, then i handed him the Dodo....

one cut, and he was grinning! "that downturned point really helps"....

I carry a Tasman Salt. Boxes, food storage bags, etc.

I alternate between a Tasman PE and a CF Harpy SE for utility carry. Both are good at the basics, but my Harpy just feels better while getting the job done.
