I have a GIN1 mfg in Golden, Colorado and my son just purchased a Spyderco that was mfg in Japan. Maybe not the same company ? or is it ?.
Another question, what product would you buy to sharpen, as all I have ever used is a steel made by Gerber which does a good job, but takes a long time.:( Thanking you in advance for your answers.:)

Spyderco has production facilities in both Colorado and Japan. So yes it is the same company.

As for sharpening, check out the Spyderco Sharpmaker, even I can sharpen knives with it, and I'm inept at sharpening.

Spyderco has production facilities in USA, Japan, Taiwan and Italy.
Another vote for the 204 Sharpmaker, you'll never have any dull knife again ;)

Sorry, forgot about Taiwan and Italy. I believe the Salsas were made in Taiwan, and the new Volpe is made in Italy, right?

You absolutely can't go wrong with the Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker for sharpening about any kind of knife, any premium blade steel and about any blade geometry.

As far as their place of manufacture the Japanese made Spydercos are very comparable to the Golden Colorado made counterparts. I used to be partial to the Colorado made blades but they are both so close quality wise that I don't pay it much mind anymore. I just get whatever blade model I want irrespective of where they are made.

Also when you get your Sharpmaker be sure to get the 2 sets of extra stones you can buy with the unit. They make a set of "Ultra Fine" stones and a set of Diamond stones as well. Both are a great investment.

Spyderco has a knife manufacturing facility in Colorado. They contract with other makers in other countries. I do not think they own or maintain facilities outside the states.

I use the 204 sharpmaker and a lansky. they handle all my needs.

As far as USA/Japan your ? has already been adressed.

Coho is correct. All but the USA knives are made by other companies under contract to Spyderco. Spyderco provides the designs and marketing. I believe they've also used Klosti in Germany and in the past used the US company Cammilus (the infamous BRK Native). The Japanese knives are made by contract firms that are also used by others USA knife firms (e.g. AlMar, SOG, Coldsteel).

Be nice to see a Queen-made Spyderco slipjoint in burgandy bone and D2 steel :) Using contract firms is at least a 150 year tradition in the cutlery business.
