Hello,
Id like to know if you can make scales for a Mule. Just an idea at the moment. I was thinking of an orange g10. nothing fancy.
Can you give me a ballpark on cost?
Thank you,

You know I have not done any of those. I almost did something with one I had. Started to turn it into a folder but backed out.

I don't really recall how the hole pattern was set up on those or how big. If you can use some drill bits and tell me the size of the holes in the handle and show me a side view for reference it will help me to figure out what I have here that I can use and come up with an idea for you. Going from memory I don't really remember enough to do that just yet.

Thanks

Maybe. I found a pic of my own and was checking it out. It looks like there are some 1/8" diameter holes in it. Is that what they are or do you recall?

The big ones are far too large to use barrels. I'd probably use barrels so you would have the option of removing the scales if you wanted to clean it. If 1/8" pivot barrels would work that would be snazzy IMO. Then you could make a few different sets of scales in different materials or colors to work on it if you wanted.

I had one here a while back. The small holes are .160". The one medium hole is .250" and the larger holes are .375". I cut some scales for the one that was sent to me. Hope this helps.

Thanks. Those are some odd ball smaller sizes. I have nothing in any barrel that would fit those but I have some .250 barrels that would fit the bigger ones but if I understand those medium ones are the lanyard and the hole in the blade not the handle.. If I did it I'd probably opt for those smaller holes to be drilled out to a 3/16" size and mount some barrels but I'd have to see it to know.

Steve, FWIW, after numerous complaints about the oddball size Spyderco changed the size of the small holes to 3/16" for the current and future Mule Team knives.

PS - still lovin my Lignum Vitae Stretch :thumbup: :D

Thanks for the info my friend. That would make it easier and less expensive than trying to come up with something to fit the one shown and my own.

Glad you are still liking that Stretch also.

Those smaller holes are 5/32".
On the 52100 MT1 yes, on the CPM M4 MT2 no.

Four largest holes are 3/8 on both. The single medium hole located directly above the rearmost large one is 1/4 on both. The ten smallest holes were 5/32 on the MT1, but when folks complained it was difficult to find hardware in that size, Spyderco increased their diameter to 3/16 for the MT2 and all subsequent Mules. You can see the difference in size in the picture below...
