Spyderco Police or Benchmade AFCK

I have carried the same Spyderco Police for the past ten years. I am A police tech and use the blade often. I have considered switching to the Benchmade AFCK. Does anyone have an opinion to share.

Okay, you've carried the same Spyderco Police for the past ten years and now want to switch it up. Understandable.

Personally, I would buy a new Spyderco Police.
1.It has VG-10 steel, which is one hell of a steel, one of the best out there.
2.It's a lockback, which is a plus IMHO. Lockbacks are my favorite.
3.There is a limeted edition one out right now with Carbon Fiber handles, which look really classy.

Obviously the AFCK is a well loved knife too. It has the opening hole and an AXIS lock which is also a great lock, it's ergonomic like the police too, and also has a great steel. (D2)

The one thing I absolutely hate about the AFCK though is the blade coating. I find the blade coatings to look ugly to begin with, and after use they get even uglier. Therefore, all else being equal with the knives I would go with the Police.

p.s.- Handle the AFCK in person if possible so you will know if it works as good in your hand as the Police that you've come to know.

I have both, and love both. I like the police because of the flat ground blade (mine is ats55) The AFCK is the m2 version(i have one plain edge, and one part serr), and is absolutely indestructable.

You simply cannot go wrong with either. You may find the locking mechanism on the afck more convenient whether its an older liner lock version or the newer axis lock than the lockback on the police model though.

edited to add: the above comments about the blade coating are true. it will come off with use, it has on all of my benchmades.

The Police is a really nice knife. I don't know about the AFCK. If you can afford it, buy one of each. Or, buy the Police first and later purchase the other.

That way, you won't have any regrets. :)

I can't say as to Spydei, but I do have an AFCKD2. I use it for left side carry since it sets up well for the weak side. The D2 is a plus also.

Stick with the Police model...It's MY favorite folder, so it MUST be GOOD!.:).

Very tough question. I have both. Have carried both. Can't help you to decide. Wait. Carry both.

My co workers are used to me now. Sifu in the laptop bag with a leatherman. Police in waistband. AFKC in left pocket. SAK soldier in the right. This thing is getting out of hand...

I'm a Benchmade fan myself and prefer the 710 and/or 806.

If you were to "stick" with Spyderco, I would recommend the Military or, if you were going to stay with the Police model, get the G10 handles - I'm definitely not a fan of smooth and thin metallic handles (or smooth and thin composite handles either)!

I would go with the AFCK.

I like the blade shape better.
I like the liner lock (or the axis lock too) better than the lockback.
I like my AFCK's G-10 handles, titanium liner, and the fact that the AFCK has the see-through spine, which prevents crap from accumulating inside. Makes for easy cleaning.
I like the feel of the AFCK in the hand.

Many Police models (FRNR, stainless) cannot be disassembled by the user. This is an edge that the AFCK has. I think there are Police models that have other handles that can be taken apart, but I can't swear that there are.

Taking apart either the Benchmade or the Spyderco voids your warranty. So whether or not the knife can be taken apart shouldn't matter at all. If the knife does ever come up with a problem (unlikely with both these models, except maybe to replace an omega spring) you could simply send it in the Benchmade or Spyderco and have them take care of it, under warranty.

The afck is not nearly as comfortable in my hand as the police.

I love lockbacks I have yet to see the need for a fancy new lock.

lockbacks have stood the test of time and I bet as this generation of knives evolve the liner and axis lock will fade out.

If you want to jazz up your edc I would go for something completely different from what you already carry. the afck is basiclly a modified spydie.

good luck

it feels good in the hand. The lock (Axis) is smooth and secure. The Liners are made of steel, not ti. I just saw on Police and tthought the ip might be thiner than on the AFCK.

The AFCK is my favorite and since i hold it i can´t go with any other.

4 carry-options. A great looking weared off coating, which is still working as a rust preventor.

Yeah, just a little... :D

I like both knives, but my EDC is the AFCK 806D2. I get a very secure grip on this knife, the D2 steel is great, the axis lock cannot be beat IMHO, the tip of the AFCK is stronger that the police, and a major reason for me is that the 806D2 can be opened as fast as any auto knife that I've ever seen. I love a strong lockback, but everyone knows, they are not the fastest opening knives. That's my $.02

its a completely diff price range, and completely diff style of knife, but....GET A SEBENZA! just kidding....so, i may have missed this, but are you looking for a spyderedge or plain edge on the police model?

I'm aware that user disassembly voids the warranty. I haven't taken apart any of my knives -- simply haven't had the need to -- but I probably would do that rather than send a knife back to the factory through the mail, and deal with all that frustrating waiting!

So I disagree that whether or not the knife can be taken apart "shouldn't matter at all." Many people like to tinker with things; taking them apart helps to gain an understanding. (It's always nice when one can figure out how to put them back together, too.) Those people may well consider disassemblability (is that even a word??) a good trait in a knife. I do.

Blop , the liner lock AFCK's do have titanium liners, which makes them somewhat lighter 4.10 oz axis 4.78 oz. Larry

You can't go wrong with either as long as it isn't a CE. (PE or fully serrated is okay... but if you choose SE make sure to have a PE backup)

Both are great but I would not honestly call either one my favourite knife. As an EDC I would have to give the edge to the Police. My personal fave is the Endura.
