Spyderco Slipjoint

Hi CM. Welcome to the Spyderco forum. thanx fer visitin'.

We are working on a modern slipjoint. Should be ready for the beginning of 2002. It is designed with a 2" (50mm) blade. Legal and sheeple friendly anywhere in the world.

A slipjoint is what most of us call an ordinary pocket knife. Its called a slipjoint because the backspring
"slips" overcenter on the blade as it opens holding it open. The blade doesn't lock. It is by far a favorite
of mine.

Single blade or multi-blade?

Oh I hope a Spyderco 3-blade slipjoint is on the drawing table too.

I love little slipjoint knives. Thanks Sal!

This one is going to be single blade, I think, 2d_edge. I would love to see a spyder-stockman in the future, but with the dyad available, I don't think it would be the best thing for spyderco's sales.

This knife will be "Right hand only'? Once again the left handers are forgotten. Looks like I get
a chance to buy something else again.

I'm still hoping callahwj..... that Sal has a fine "Spyderco Stockman" on the drawing table.

Any chance we could talk you into another blade steel? Say, AUS 8? How about ATS-55? Nothing fancy, just not AUS 6.

It's worth a shot. I know you're just trying to keep costs down, but I think it would be worth the extra $'s for AUS 8.

Sal - out of curiousity - how much of a difference would the steel make in the MSRP? Especially a change from AUS 6 - AUS 8, or AUS 6 - ATS-55? Also, when do we get to see a picture? Thanks!

I´ve got this sinking feeling... Sal if you excuse, I don´t want to be disrespectful, however I do not understand the strategy behind the steel choice. I am sure you and your CO has reasons for this choice, could you plz explain them for us? (There must be more then just the issue of MSRP?)

This is my chain of thoughts: You stated that the cost must be held down. I suppose this has to do with the fact that you are making a model that will suit every ELU and amateur out there.

However, there are more than plenty of such knives in this category on the market. Most of them sport with more than just a single blade. I believe that in order to make a mark, you´d have to make something different.

Therefore, to choose a "better" steel would be an important impact despite the higher MSRP. I believe this knife is jeopardizing being outcompeted by all the SAKs, stockmans and ultimately by Delicas and Calypso JRs, both featuring a higher end quality steel.

Just my 0.2 öre :)

Take care!

A SYDERCO STOCKMAN?????? Will someone please call a medic and re-start my heart. I think I'm
in heaven!!!!!!! When!!!!!!!!!!!!

IMO the way Spyderco does AUS-6 is pretty darned good. Besides AUS-8, I think another good alternative to AUS-6 for keeping the price down might be GIN-1. All have fairly strong rust resistance. ATS-55 makes for good cutting blades, but for a knife that will be at the bottom of a sweaty pocket, will be more prone to rust.

It's a possibility this knife may also serve as an introduction for many people to Spyderco knives, so I doubt the blade would be in VG-10. Though we could hope. :)
