Everyone raves about how great this knife is so, I was thinking about getting one while I still can. However, I've never had an ATS-34 knife before. How is the edge retention? I know that it sharpens easily but edge retention is more important to me anyway. Also, does the Wegner have the eccentric pivot? Would I be better off getting the Lum tanto folder in VG-10? I guess if I didn't like the Wegner, I could always trade for a Lum. Thanks.

The ATS-34 used for the Wegner holds an edge well. It IS easy to sharpen, but you really have to use it a while to dull it. You cannot adjust the pivot. What purpose do you want the knife for? The Wegner is a great knife, but so is the Lum, so it really depends on what you intend to use it for, and your preference in materials.

No matter which one you choose, it will be typical Spyderco quality. They just make great stuff!

The edge retention on ATS-34 blades is awesome and very hard to beat among similarly priced blades. However this depends on heat treating. For ex. SPYDERCO Wegner displays slightly worse edge hold in pure slicing (hemp rope) than BENCHMADE ATS-34 blades, for ex. Pinnacle. At the same time Wegner is easier to sharpen.

Wegner’s strong point is excellent handling comfort in hard use and equally excellent cutting accuracy for light, precise cutting tasks. Weak point is the clip designed for tip-up position in complete with liner lock. The SpyderHole might be somewhat bigger too.

As to comparison with Lum Tanto – they are so different knives that I can’t even compare them.

Ant Dog - I was going to use whichever knife I get for general EDC and possible defensive use if necessary. That sucks that the Wegner dosn't have the eccentric pivot, that's a main feature to me.
