Spydies with pearl

I am new to the Spyderco crowd. Please forgive me for asking question that might sound too obvious to experienced Spyderco fans.

There are some spydies that are popping up on Ebay from time to time that have MOP on one side of the handle. Not inlays, but overlays. They do not look like designed by Santa Fe Stoneworks.

Are those real Spydercos made by Spyderco specs or some kind of aftermarket "improvements"?
Thanks a bunch.

The knives are Spydercos. The pearl overlays are aftermarket add ons. I believe the eBay seller (cutleryp) who lists many of them either did them at one time, or had them done by someone, for their brick & mortar. To put things in a bit of perspective, all the SFSW modified Spydercos, except for a relatively small quantity marketed by Spyderco in the early '90s, would be considered aftermarket mods as well, and are, in fact, warranted by SFSW. I do like the look of the SFSW overlays better.

I believe AG Russell sells some Kiwis that are in pearl and are factory items not aftermarket.

Hi WhyNot,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum.

Both Deacon and Brownshoe are correct. Most are aftermarket, but we did a run of Kiwi's for AG in pearl that were factory built.

That's quite true, in both white MOP and back lip pearl. Matter of fact, I have one of the black lip ones. However, like all bolster and scales Kiwis, the pearl is on both sides and is not an overlay.
