Stacked leather Bucks

Another model or models of Buck fixed blades I'm becoming interested in are the stacked leather models. I've see LE 119's in the secondary market as well as the 102 (has the 102 been offered with the stacked leather more than once, seems like I've ran across older models and I thought Buck just offered it again this year). Have pretty much all of Bucks fixed blade "hunting knives" been offered in this handle material at one time or another? Anyone care to post some pics of their leather wrapped models?

I've seen the 119, 103 and 102 and currently I don't own any of them. Perhaps others were offered but I've not seen the 121 in stacked leather. That would make a good collection. DM

I just ran across both the 102 and the 105 on a retail site. Both looked pretty nice and didn't seem too expensive.

I haven't seen a lot of those and I think most are fairly recent.

Seems to me it started with some models made just for L.L. Bean.

I have seen some complaints about the leather handles......have you dived into the Search Function on these?

Might be some answers there.

Yes. Found some posts with photos of the 105, 103, 102 and 119 but not much info on when they came about or any other offerings. Gonna try it again this weekend. Unfortunatley searching for "stacked leather" also turns up anything with "leather" in the thread which adds a ton to the search results.

And a quote from Richard Matheny:

The 119 CA was originally done for Cabela's as a special project starting in 1990 with the stacked leather handle, aluminum fittings and a satin blade. The first version of this knife had a thin guard. The remaining versions from subsequent orders had the standard guard. This knife was also done for the Cuttlery Shoppe in Boise, Idaho in the mid 1990's (200 - 300 Pcs.).

Here are the two stacked leather 119 I have:
The limited edition from 2008 and the Cutlery Shoppe
from the mid nineties.

Best,
Haebbie

Well, Haeb.......I love the top one.......hate the bottom one.

Very interesting.

The bottom one looks like an economy version of the top one......how about that blood groove??

Looks tiny and out of proportion.

The hand guard looks very cheap as well.

The workmanship on the leather of the top one seems to far exceed that of the bottom one......the handle of the bottom one is all straight with no taper toward the pommel. It's like all the leathers were the same size and no shaping was done.

It's straight and has all the visual appeal of a length of pipe.

I suppose all those factors save time in construction (and money).

I would guess the bottom one was first done to specifications set by a buyer who didn't want to spend much money......Cabela's or L.L. Bean......and then some leftovers of that same model were sold by Buck at a later time unmarked.

The thin guard paired with the stacked leather handle is a bit to reminiscent of a Ka-bar to me. I know there are some people that prefer a Ka-bar to a 119, but I'm not one of them. My 119 does exactly what I want it to, take an edge and hold it.

Here are the knives with the sheaths.
By the way: the LE is a factory blem.
May be that it is assorted because of
the thin handle.

It's also got the most bizarre, thinnest blood groove I've ever seen.

Could they have done a few with their milling machine set wrong and then just made blems out of them?

Maybe it was an early version as they were experimenting with the specs set forth by he Cutlery Shoppe in Boise, Idaho?

It would be nice to hear something from Buck on how that odd and interesting knife came to be.

Yes, I like these burgundy colored sheaths too.
But the matt black ones are great looking too.

I've got enough old flap-overs that I can use when I need to carry.

I wish they'd have made a flap-over in burgundy.

:)
